Something related to CTE is my first thought, whenever a football player dies young.

CTE is primarily a lineman’s problem. Running backs are vulnerable to it as well. QBs, slightly less. But a cornerback plays mostly out in the defensive backfield and tends to have less exposure to potential head injuries.

I’m not knowledgeable enough to have a well-founded opinion, so this is just idle speculation; but while cornerbacks aren’t down in the trenches slamming into tackles and defensive ends, they are out running at top speed to take down fleet-footed wide receivers. On those occasions that they _do_ butt heads with a wideout, the momentum has to add some extra force, no?

(Minor hijack) This is not 100% accurate, as RB, LB, and DBs are increasingly represented in the samples of professional athletes with CTE. While these are not the most recent numbers (pulling directly from [this 2013 article:](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3624697/))

> Positions played by National Football League players positive for CTE included offensive linemen (26%), running backs (20%), defensive linemen (14%), linebackers (14%), quarterbacks (6%), defensive backs (6%), tight ends (6%) and wide receivers (6%).

…the same trends are listed in [a more recent 2017 article](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5807097/)

> | Characteristics | Mild CTE (n = 44) | Severe CTE (n = 133) | Total (n = 177) |
