I was a kid in the 80’s. My parents, both Christians(as am I), always warned against TV preachers like Swaggart, Bakker, Robert Tilton, etc. It’s just a cash grab, they thought. Despite reputation these guys bring, there are real pastors out there; they just tend to avoid TV and begging for money constantly. ---

From the fundagelical perspective, it was the multiple flings with sex workers, as has been noted. From my very non-fundie Christian perspective, it was just the usual business of finding bogeymen to blame the sins of the world on - liberals, homosexuals, pornography, etc. - so that they didn’t have to look at their own selves and find any sin there any worse than losing their temper in traffic. ---
