> August and September passed without a single Atlantic hurricane, thanks in part to a powerful El Niño. Forecasters are now raising the prospect that the season could conclude with zero Atlantic hurricanes.
>
> “We are witnessing one of the most extraordinary Atlantic hurricane seasons in modern history,” said Alex DaSilva, lead hurricane expert at AccuWeather. “There is an increasingly likely scenario in which the Atlantic season ends without a single hurricane for the first time in more than a century.” The last time was in 1914, and before that 1907.

Two years after Helene, I am not complaining.

We’re getting steady rain here in the Chicago area, which started very early this morning, and will keep falling through Friday morning; it’s apparently moisture from Hurricane Polo, which was rapidly drawn to the northeast after the storm came onshore.

NWS is getting increasingly bullish on the rainy mess in the southwest Gulf of **Mexico**. Which may well become Isaias here in a couple days.

This weather professional and blogger has an interesting analysis. It’s a long article, but no fluff or sensation anywhere.

> **[Odds Increase for Gulf Development this Week](https://michaelrlowry.substack.com/p/odds-increase-for-gulf-development)**
>
> Forecast models turn more bullish on development over the southwestern Gulf but disagree on just how organized it’ll get

What’s eyepopping to me is the map of GoM surface warmth partway down the article. Substantially the entre GoM & Florida Strait is at record warm temps. Net of a small hole of normal temps near the center of the Gulf.

Probably more of a prodigious rainmaker than wind threat, but never say never.

Minor aside: If it does become a named TS or better, I am anticipating all sorts of fun as various American newscasters try to pronounce that name per the NWS’s long-published guidance.

Semi-related aside:
I remembered that we had another storm Isiaias and corresponding thread awhile ago. Yep, 6 years ago. Since there are six annual hurricane name lists, it makes sense they’d repeat every 6 years. 🙃. I still watch the morning news, and the morning weather guy did a pretty good job of it. Then again, I’d expect any of the Gulf coast meteorologists to be up to speed on tropical systems.

Fortunately/unfortunately if/when it develops, it will most likely hit well to the east towards Alabama or the Florida panhandle, though we could still use some more rain around here.

Houston area. Got a bit of rain from the edges of Polo but some counties are still in a drought.

And this morning’s 0700 NWS update has created a formal “invest” (AL92) for the current southwest GoM disturbance, dispatched a jet and later a C-130 to reconnoiter, and bumped the development odds of a TD to 90% with commentary that’ll probably happen on Wed.

Isaias is about to exit the dressing room for the warm-up room.
