2026 Winter Olympics - follow along and discussion thread

It’s a crowd pleaser, though. I saw him do that, and wondered if the rules had changed.

I found this on FB, from one of the drone pilots:

I like the drone footage, but the buzzing is beginning to drive me a little batty.

They may very well be generally pathetic. Direct TV has two UHD 4K channels. The Super Bowl was on 106, and the Olympics were on 105. I figured we could bounce back and forth between them very easily but, during that entire time, the only Olympic even being shown on 105 was the snow boarding competition. That’s it.

The only tolerable way to watch the Olympics is on-demand replay of an individual event.

Does Big Lactic Acid have some sort of contract with NBC or something that forces them to bring it up during every skiing and speed skating event?

I don’t have that capability, but you have to be right about it. I DVR events and they may run a few minutes long and I miss the Money Shot. It’s okay if I happened to DVR the next event. I pick up where it cut off. But sometimes I don’t.

Got lucky today with Women’s Moguls. DVR cut off with two runs to go for Gold. Thankfully, got to catch the end on the beginning of the Biathlon that came next. Great finish! I won’t spoil it, as it was early and most y’all probably haven’t seen it yet. The middle bump section of the mogul course makes my mouth water! 4 lines of perfect bumps. You don’t see them in the Wild anymore.

Gah. Getting really frustrated with this figure skating coverage. See, for a normal event, the four shorter programs get shown on E!, then the four longer programs get shown on E!. It’s far from comprehensive, of course (12 per is the most I’ve ever seen), but I get an excellent cross-section of contenders and don’t miss out on anything. That’s the advantage of having a single cable channel that has the time to devote tot he sport. (Same deal with CBS Sports Network and SailGP.) But I find out that the Olympics is spread across three channels, but there are lots of repeats and USA has the most coverage. I don’t want to bog down my DVR with duplicate programs, much less have to sift through them all. So I stick to USA. I notice something is wrong when I don’t see the men’s part of the team competition. And then the free dance part of the team competition. And then the individual ladies. And then individual pairs. And literally just today I find out that some of figure skating, including a good chunk of individual men’s, is on NBC (and of course being NBC, we’re probably talking a heavily America-centric Greatest Hits version). I’ve burned through over half of the entire individual coverage in like two nights.

It’s baffling. I spend the better part of a month watching a lovely and tremendously gratifying panoply of figure skating events… Grand Prix, Nationals, European, and Four Continents, in that order… during which the broadcasters can’t go five minutes without bleating about how huge the Olympics are, and when the Olympics finally arrive, it’s a complete morass. That’s not even considering all the interruptions to yak about this hockey game or that curling match. I’m actually already looking forward to the World Championships, that’s how disillusioned I am.

Did Kaori Sakamoto do well, at least?

I like the mogul event. It’s been years since I have skied moguls, but I’ve never seen such perfect moguls in the wild. I think I would like to see some variations in the bumps simply to make viewing more interesting, but I suppose for competition the groomed moguls are better. Maybe there could be a separate event using wild ass moguls that form naturally.

I’ve been watching on CBC. With all the bitching about coverage here, I’m very happy with that choice. Sadly, this new job is taking too much time, and I’m not watching as much as I’d like to.

Groomed moguls are essential to the sport as it is. At the start of the sport, back in the 70s and 80s there were hot dog or extreme moguls competitions, but those were judged purely on style. Starting in the early 90s nearly all competitions moved to man made moguls and the sport has evolved.

There still are some natural bumps competitions, but they are all local.

Between CBC, SportsNet and TSN there are no shortage of channels showing Olympic coverage. The only problem is often they are all showing the same damn event.

Men’s Ice Hockey starts today and this is significant because the NHL has indeed paused this time to make sure professional players can play for their nation.

My Red Wings have one American, one German, and one Swede in the mix. I’m happy to not only cheer for USA, but to have Dylan Larkin on the team.

I love Canada but…screw them in this. I hope USA wins this whole thing. I presume Canada are general favorites, though. Their roster is stacked.

Talk about unity. The, shudder, Colorado Avalanche have a player on US team as well.

Unity!

Sidney Crosby is Canada’s third line centre. He has likely never been a third line player in his life.

Folks, I don’t want to shock anyone, but there just might be some corruption in ice dancing judging.

Well, while sports with judges are usually wonderful to watch, they cannot be fair athletic competition.

Is there? I didn’t find the final result to be all that shocking. The top 5 dances were all about equal.

I watched one of the short dances, and i have no idea what the specific rules and criteria are, but i would have rated the winners in the same order, and the top 4 above everyone else.

I agree with puzzlegal. It must have been a bitter pill for the American couple, together for 15 years, to come in second behind the French couple, who have only been skating together less than a year.

I think the judges in competitions like this try to be fair, but I’m sure it often comes down to opinion.

But as a casual observer, I thought the French couple showed an Elegance (with a capital E) that the Americans did not. Just enough of that something extra to put them over the top.
