Broad subject.

Can someone recommend a book that gives a good overview of the subject?

It has more than just 20th century history - but I recently started[this book](http://www.amazon.com/Africa-Biography-Continent-John-Reader/dp/067973869X) that was given to me by one of my friends who is from South Africa.

She had raved and raved about this book and its wealth of information and offered it to me to read since I’m always asking her questions.

She said both her mother and brother use it as a reference often (both still live in South Africa), and her husband also gave it a good review. I’m enjoying it so far, but not anywhere near 20th century history yet.
