I bought some as presents. They arrived in 3 days.
23andme received my sample 1 week ago, and I got my results today. Still looking through them, but I’m happy I did it.
At the new price, or the old one?
The new $99 price.
Sorry, I forgot to ask—did you pay for the $9 shipping, or the $36 shipping?
$9.95 shipping
Ordered on Tuesday night, got the tests delivered on Friday. They are in CA, I had them delivered to Brooklyn.
This site is on my radar. I’m thinking of giving it a shot after Christmas, if the $99 price holds.
That is their new price. They have a goal of a million more customers over the next year.
My wife surprised me with a 23andMe kit for Christmas. She also got herself one, so we’ll be nerding out on some results in a few weeks. Can’t wait!
So, I had purchased 23andme under their Black Friday special.
The data is released in stages. About a week or so after they received my kit, the medical information was posted onto their site. One important note, is that the data and risk information assumes you have European ancestry. That is the only choice they have now (based on the numbers and background of people that have been tested).
The data was mildly interesting… It said a particular drug (that I had never heard of) was less effective on me. I was at reduced risk of Alzheimer’s (again - assuming European ancestry - I am Middle Eastern) - but still it is was a bit comforting. It did show I was at increases risk of Atrial Fibrillation and Venous Thromboembolism. As a result, I did do some leg exercises on a plane yesterday. I might mention the risks to my doctor when I see him.
You do have the choice of not revealing your risks of Parkinson’s and Alzheimers since those are incurable diseases.
The information for the relative finder was available about a week or so after the disease risk data. For me, the closest relatives it showed were described as “3rd to Distant Cousin”. There was nobody I recognized, and nobody I care to meet.
It said I’m in Haplogroup T2, which apparently the outlaw Jesse James was as well, so presumably we have some common ancestor.
Trait information was also provided which was interesting, only in that it revealed what I already knew. I was at reduced risk of male pattern baldness, had brown eyes, had wet earwax, etc. It also characterized my muscles as those of a sprinter. It also said if I was a smoker, I was likely to smoke more. Thankfully, I’m not a smoker.
A quick summary would be that it was interesting, but not earth-shattering.
Bumping this thread to say that I finally jumped, and just got my results back. My paternal haplogroup is I1*, my maternal haplogroup is H1, and I’m 3.1% Neanderthal. Also my eyes are “likely blue”
