Knew it would happen. A few weeks of polls showing they’d loose the election if held today, they’d start to crack. Cheney’s going to have the big one soon. He uses the F word at a U.S. senator. Of course the senator had it coming for crossing the line by being critical of administration policy. I’m no Cheney fan, but I still don’t see how it’s a big deal. Let me cue you all in on a little something. The Senate is a big collection of powerful egos. How thoise egos manifest themselves is wonderful political theater, and has given us about two centuries worth of stories. Today is no different. Some senators channel their egos into becoming the model of gentility and good manners on the Hill. Orrin Hatch is a modern legend in this regard. Some senators channel theirs into becoming legislative powerhouses, as Ted Kennedy was for years. Some senators channel theirs into being wheelers and dealers like Tom Daschle. Some senators, though, carve out little fiefdoms for themselves, guard them jealously, and abuse their senatorial privileges in petty ways. These senators, from both parties, are assholes. There’s really no other word for them. And a second’s reflection can come up with some names that fit the bill here. Patrick Leahy is an asshole. I might have told him to fuck himself too, rules be damned. ---

Nah, the big deal isn’t that he cussed. I do it all the time. What is a big deal is that he said it infront of about 12 other senators in the Senate. Again, I am not offended by this, but its a bad move on his part and it shows, I believe, that he is under a lot of stress and its starting to show. I would have a lot more vile contempt for him if he had just kept cool and went off to do evil in secret. This is just funny to me because it shows that he is losing it. The other thread sort of deals with the fact that its outrageous and that he supposedly is a member of the party of family values. You just have to think of it like this. Bush dissed Kerry for saying that he fucked up the war, and said that it was beneath him. Now Cheney does it on the exact same day that the new ad came out on the Bush Cheney website? And now they have Cheney on the Reuters wire losing control of his language in front of other senators. He loses because it will make him look bad. All this on top of the fact that people urged Bush to dump him for 2004, must really seem bad. I am going to enjoy the meltdown. ---

I was amazed to watch George H. W. self-destruct in 1992, and now am not so amazed that George W. and Co. are doing it in 2004 as, well, just watching it. To those who don’t think this that big a deal: The elections in the fall are going to be decided by the fence-sitters, and it’s going to boil down to issues of character. Incidents like this don’t do much to foster confidence in our Veep’s character. And since he looks like that villain from Underdog anyway, he’s starting from a disadvantage. ---

Similarly, has anyone else picked up some strange resonances between George W. Bush and _Dukes of Hazard_’s Roscoe P. Coltrane? I’m not sure what it is, but I keep expecting Bush to do that wierd “Ah-gudge-gudge-gudge” laugh during a press conference. ---
