30 Day Song Challenge, number 6: A Song That Reminds You of a Certain Place.

ANY K-Pop reminds me of the almost two years I spent in South Korea. I could post any number of songs that were hits while I was there, but I’ll go with Abracadabra by Brown Eyes Girls because I remember wandering through the shopping district one sunny day when it seemed to be blaring out of every store.

Der Doppelgänger (Schubert).

It reminds me of … Arezzo, Italy?

I was there to study Italian, and near the end of the trip we had a big party. I got very drunk and was convinced to sing. I sang this for some reason.

I played so much softball until my 30s, that it was almost like a second full-time job. So, anytime I hear Fogerty on the radio singing “Centerfield,” it makes me extremely nostalgic for certain ball fields, especially the one I got married on.

Hold Your Head Up - Argent

So many to pick from, but I’ll narrow it down to this one. The year was 1978 age 14.

My favorite place as a kid/ teenager was a campground my family spent time in every summer. They held a nightly dance and my fondest memories are of spending all day at the beach, then showering and getting dolled up for the dance at night.

I can remember walking across a large field with my group of friends, hearing this song blasting loudly off in the distance. The song getting louder the closer we got, then as we crested a hill, seeing the lights and a large crowd of teenagers dressed in bell bottoms and earth shoes looking to mingle, dance and possibly get lucky.

Buble and Shelton, “Home”. https://youtu.be/Q33YUxnGvwE?t=119

During a stay in Jakarta, my host had this on her mix tape. It was playing in the car while we were on our way downtown to a Jazz club for the evening. I’d never heard this song and, since I’d already been away for weeks and was ready to be home, I listened with intent. That night was great. There was something surreal about grooving to smooth Jazz while overlooking the crazy Jakarta traffic in the roundabout below.

Until clicking your link, it’d been years since I’d heard that. Now it’s stuck in my head

Jillian by Within Temptation

Reminds me of my and my wife’s first apartment in the United States. I used to put it on all the time there and it just kind of became a song we both loved and talked about a lot. Within Temptation was, and may still be, my favorite band.

We even named our daughter Jillian. Not after this song, but we did talk about the song when we named her.

Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen

It always takes me to southern Utah blazing down the highway just before sunrise in my dad’s 1972 Ford pickup with the windows down. The radio had been spotty but the vocal lead came in loud and clear and my dad cranked it up for the guitar. I was 5 years old

I worked in a bar/dance club in the early 90’s and so many songs remind me of being there, but the one I’ll pick was not a dance song but was the one the DJ opened with each night for a stretch because she knew I liked it.

I cringe at its dorkness now.

Let the Day Begin by The Call

There was a bar that my ex and I used to hang in. This was always playing on the jukebox

One night my bf was so drunk, he was talking back back to the jukebox, then he somehow thought it was a slot machine and he had won - so he was standing there bouncing up and down going CHINGA CHINGA CHINGA!!!

Crazy days back then.

One night ages ago, my girlfriend (now wife) and I snuck off to my dad’s shop to play guitar and smoke pot. The song we figured out how to play that night was Bauhaus’ Hope. So, when I hear that song, I always think of my dad’s shop, full of sawdust, with us playing through the same amp.

That was the one that came to mind when I considered it for awhile. The one that popped into my head immediately (and I thought, nah, too easy) was Steely Dan’s My Old School. When the opening chords hit, I’m taken back to stocking and facing non-foods at Kroger, and that’s blaring over the muzak. I probably wouldn’t have given that song a chance if I hadn’t heard it a couple thousand times over the course of that job.

Hearing this brings me back to learning this song for a new band gig in B’ham. “Think about it, Darlin’”.
