Baldwin’s brush off of Bon Jovi is based on an old joke I’ve heard several comedians tell, but I think it originated with Don Rickles. Rickles said when he was a young-ish comic in Vegas and courting the woman he would eventually marry he saw Frank Sinatra, who he knew but only barely, and he cornered one of Sinatra’s entourage in the men’s room and begged him to ask Frank to please come speak to him so he could impress his girlfriend. Frank was of course totally sympathetic to guys wanting to score, so as he was he was leaving the restaurant he walked over and tapped on Rickles’ shoulder and said ‘Donny, hiya doin’ tonight’, to which Rickles replied by looking over his shoulder and saying “Fuck off Frank, I’m busy” then going back to his date. Rickles said Frank turned red and stormed out of the restaurant calling Rickles every kind of motherfucker and Jewish pejorative he could think of and saying how that \*@(@#$\*8hing would never work in Vegas again, etc. etc… He also said his girlfriend was _REALLY_ impressed. Rickles was afraid he’d end the night in the E.R. and was paranoid until he somehow got word to Sinatra that he’d kill a man or whatever it took to make it right. Per Rickles when Sinatra calmed down and realized what had happened he thought it was one of the funniest things ever and he made Rickles tell the story a thousand and four times, and it’s how they became friends (though ‘Vegas friends’). No idea if the story’s true, but Rickles tells it well and since it’s so unlike most of his jokes I tend to believe it. ---
