When I first heard Manfred Mann doing the song (which I was familiar with), I got the impression they only listened to the lyrics once or twice and didn’t bother to write them down, and that they’re saying “douche,” not “deuce.” Springsteen has explained the lyric: “The original lyric is ‘cut loose like a deuce’ referring to a two seat hot-rod, a little deuce coupe.” The official lyrics of the Manfred Mann version uses “deuce.” But then, the official lyric to Roxy Music’s “Love is a drug” is “can’t you see,” when they’re singing something quite different. ---
