I got sober! Today is my 13th birthday!
I am pretty excited, even if only my mom remembered. We are having a huge scare with our Newfoundland today, and both kids are home sick, so things are crazy. I’m sure the husband will remember when he looks at his calendar, right? 😉
Anyway, this has been an amazing ride for me, and for those around me. I never imagined that things could be this good in my life. Miracles happen in my life every day, and I have everything I need, and almost everything I want (even things I didn’t know I wanted!). If I had made a list back in 1991 about what I wanted to get out of living sober, and then I got what was on my list, I would have sold myself so short.
If I had gotten what I deserved, I would be a miserable woman indeed. Instead, I am happy, joyous and free, with proven solutions to all of my problems today, if I choose to use them!
People who do what I did, the way I did it, don’t get sober or stay sober. They end up incarcerated, institutionalized, on the street or dead. I thank my God every day for the strength to make different choices today.

My Grandad was not strong enough to do what you have done, and his addiction killed him in December. So it is always nice to hear success stories.

OK, so one friend remembered and sang “happy birthday” to me on the phone! The husband still hasn’t remembered, but we are having a pretty tough day-

Gemma, it ain’t about strength, it’s just about being _done_. Some people are never done. Strength? Hell, it takes more strength than most normal people have just to live the way we live sometimes!
In light of what is going on with our Angus, I am sooooooo glad I don’t have to drink over every little thing that happens anymore. I would be unable to cope with this, or make any decisions, if I was wasted.

I’m looking forward to giving my dad his 20th year coin next March. Many of his best friends are also friends of Bill’s, and every one of them has a strength and humility that really helps them enjoy life that much more.

My mom’s sober birthday is in March also, it’ll be 30 YEARS. Amazing what the program can do, and such a miracle and a gift. 5,016 days here and still going strong. Keep coming back!
