Most of the “Rambo” knives out there have serrations on the back edge that aren’t offset, and are therefore as useful as tits on a bull for sawing through anything tougher than tissue paper. They make semi-decent fish scalers in a pinch.
Here is a link to an interesting article in today’s Times on the evidence against Kohberger: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/05/us/idaho-murders-suspect-kohberger-evidence.html?unlocked_article_code=NWOU9RB01ZhYxeVOMOrnr6bGeFkDtOn74aOw8QBTYTviQaynkKLgyVV-jJxYO70r86UeNq4J7V4JULgqSnHRT8KfSBl1uYPulPGcC8Ncvkg26FUrUYoqI5QXbcEl0ln9wGtLYwwu46QHCj0d5x7mU29S2pwRWnZhzcyyj0-oj6kl7IUvfsgaB8QQ46uDBLCFdFoqTVng671iQJIvJep3viGRCdZnCgouEUm7z3zmb7LeHQe-a_NsYkZFn3GY9JNmBdFEFqYNgc2cZcbMF0n5iPhhurVtdM02A9V5crkZ4EoutaSsvQbshAyBivSuBCXBiND1sW63XJXTk4uLpaG9xvIrlXH3wCun38fwWho&smid=share-url
Here is an informative paragraph from the story:
“But in a small college town that had not recorded a murder in seven years, the newly unsealed court records offer a detailed account of how police officers, with the aid of dozens of F.B.I. agents, methodically triangulated clues. Among them were DNA found on a knife sheath left at the scene, surveillance cameras in the neighborhood, cellphone tower records and DNA from the suspect’s father collected from the family’s trash in Pennsylvania — all of which, the police said, pointed to Mr. Kohberger.”
The Ka-Bar is primarily a utility knife. Now the British commando dagger- that was designed to kill people-
Right. But people are assuming this guy is guilty based upon probable cause evidence, not beyond a reasonable doubt” evidence . In too many high profile cases, there has been a tendency for the police to build a “house of card” case. This guy could well be the killer, sure. But let us not assume he is guilty yet is what i am saying.
The Rambo knife teeth are angled towards the handle. They’re designed to rip flesh when the knife is pulled out. A very gruesome weapon.
I’m not sure if serrated knifes are legal in Western militaries.
The Idaho killers knife hasn’t been found. It’s probably in a lake or ravine by now.
There was a rape case local to me where the victim was holding her cell phone the entire time. When D.M. describes being frozen she is likely referring to the phenomenon of tonic immobility which is the well-documented freeze response to threats in which a person literally cannot move their body. Very common in sexual assault, but it can also explain behavior in a wide variety of threatening situations. Presumably she fell out of that state long enough to close the door, but it wouldn’t surprise me if she was still pretty messed up for a while. Especially if alcohol was involved.
No they aren’t. The reason they are there is to 1. act as a twist-point for cutting through wire (as seen in the photo above) and 2. to look cool. Nobody in their right mind puts something on a knife blade that will catch or hang up in whatever you are cutting.
Likely, but they probably do know what it looked like, if they have the scabbard and it’s a standard, established brand like Ka-Bar.
And when folks say that “the police” surveiled his parents’ home and searched their trash and so on, would that be the Idaho police, Pennsylvania police, or the FBI?
We’re also not on the jury. If I were on the jury, and the only evidence presented to us were what the general public has right now, then I’d have to vote “not guilty”. There’s enough evidence public now that I can say, from the comfort of my desk chair, that he’s probably guilty, and that’s enough for a guy just sitting in a desk chair whose opinion has no consequence. A juror needs (or at least, should need) more, but then, they probably do have more.
Ok. I’m not going to test it find out.
I’m not sure why, but attacks by knives seem more terrifying than guns. Probably because its close quarters fighting.
The horror those 4 kids faced is unimaginable. It may have taken awhile for them to bleed out. Cut arteries kill much quicker.
Probably move this to #1. It’s been a lot of years, but I don’t think knives like that were generally mass produced until after the movies. It’s just too big and heavy to tote around just in case you find yourself running around a forest/jungle half naked with a bunch of armed guys chasing you.
I’ve seen knock offs of Rambo knives advertised for well under $50. That should tell you a bit about the quality.
I would guess PA police along with the FBI. Neither the Idaho police or the FBI would have jurisdiction to operate in PA without collaborating with them. Remember, the FBI is only assisting on this case. Their bailiwick is federal crimes, not local small town murders.
Most people have never been shot, but almost everyone has had cuts of one kind or another. They have a basis for imagining what being badly cut with a knife would feel like, while being shot is more abstract to them. I think this contributes to a more visceral fear of knives in some people, even if they would consciously say that the gun is more dangerous.
This interested me. I used to fence at school, many years ago, and our foils, sabers and épées were almost all entirely made by Wilkinson Sword.
I did not know they also made deadly weapons.
Nicely balanced and fun to use though. I guess they know what they are doing.
I’d also place bets there’s some kind of psychosexual association with the penetration aspect. The same way slasher flicks keep being made in juxtaposition to sex. Excitement/terror being two sides of the same coin. But that’s just my WAG.
I used to think guns were more dangerous until I saw a police video demonstrating how easy it was to stab an armed person before they could fire a shot. Bringing a knife to a gun fight may not always be a terrible idea.
I’ve never thought about it like that, I think that you are very right.
I assume that you know that Wilkinson Sword make razorblades, and no longer make weapons.
Sorry to continue the hijack, but AFAIK, Ka-Bar does not make a knife like the one that fits in the sheath shown on the news, with a serrated back. They do make a version with serrations on the edge, near the hilt, that are clearly designed for cutting things like rope.
Note Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution is a Federal Crime:
An author I like once wrote that human wars have gotten so big and terrible because they’re fought at a distance. His theory was that when you’re face to face with someone you’ve just killed, it affects you more than if you kill someone at a distance. As the distance increases, the less the horror affects you. As a result, there’s good reason for not starting the damn things to begin with.
One person is a tragedy. A million are a statistic.
I have a custom one made from damascus. It fits the hand really well, and is extremely pointy and sharp. This is not a knife you use to open a can of C-rations, like a K-bar often did.
Well, they have now released enough solid probable cause evidence, so let us see how the hearing goes.
Was that John Keegan in The Face of Battle? It’s been quite a while since I read it, so I can’t recall for sure.
