4 University of Idaho students stabbed to death [November 16, 2022]

He’s not going to be popular in prison for killing young innocent people. There’s a good chance that his sentence will end early in a stabbing

Loving & supportive parents - his dad flew out to help him drive home across the country, so in that way he is better off than a lot of other prisoners.

Your cite does not indicate that Kohberger “wanted to emulate Ted Bundy”.

The pertinent part about Bundy in your cite said:

Investigators recovered data from a phone belonging to Bryan Kohberger that includes internet history from the weeks before and after the Idaho killings that show searches on Bundy, according to Dateline

I hope you can now see that this in no way indicates that he wanted to emulate Bundy. The trick is to see that before you post.

I have also done internet searches on Ted Bundy before. I’m sure many people have. It’s a bad look for you to leap to conclusions. May you be more careful in the future.

There were other things. He took photos in Bundy’s style. Attacked student housing. Bundy killed nursing students.

No one will ever know for sure what Kohberger was thinking or trying to accomplish.

I agree it would be incorrect to assert for certain any connection to Bundy. I doubt the Bundy speculation is admissible in court.

This article is a little out of date. A lot has come out in 2025.

We might. A life sentence is a long time. People change. In 25 years maybe he’s ready to talk about what he was thinking and trying to accomplish.

Post-conviction, didn’t Bundy, Henry Lee Lucas, Wesley Dodd, etc. derive great satisfaction from all the curiosity and attention? An actual dividend to the thrill of killing itself.

I believe they did.

I bet we’ll get some insight into Kohberger’s thinking at some fairly early date after sentencing.

Bryan appeared in court and plead guilty. Sentencing July 23.

Well, we might get what he says was his motivation. But who knows if he’ll be telling the truth? And at some point, even if he is telling the truth, his thought processes had to have been sufficiently alien to most of us that we still couldn’t really understand.

What about the knife itself? It hasn’t been found. Has there been any word on that?

This is a highly unrealistic expectation.

Do you think he had an accomplice? My daughter said she would put money on it. I don’t see it, but she did remind me that the others in the house that were spared did not pick him out as being the killer. I’ve seen a lot of pics of him, and he hasn’t changed his appearance. I still think it’s a no because the defense tried to put forth a motion saying four other people could have possibly done it, that was thrown out. We also discussed him taking the fall. That doesn’t surprise me because in my mind he wants the attention. Any thoughts on this? Anything that might suggest it that I’m missing?

Possibly because only one person saw him, it was dark, they were startled/confused, and he was wearing a mask?

Not sure what the mystery is with that.

Yes, I mentioned that obvious fact to her. She still thinks someone else might have been in the house. I was putting it out here to see if anyone else thought so, too.

Getting an accomplice for bank robbery, say, is easy: You offer the other person a cut of the cash. But it’s really tough to get an accomplice for murder. It’s very, very rare for one person to have a motive strong enough that they’re willing to kill for it, and much harder yet to get two people so motivated to kill the same people.

I’ve seen enough episodes of COPS or the news that Person A wants their current/ex/neighbor/boss/someone dead. They go to Person B for help with finding a hitman & Person B finds them a ‘hitman’ who happens to be an undercover cop who conveniently just happens to have about six video cameras recording everything in the car that they’re discussing the hit.
Most people are not only not that motivated but disgusted by the thought of murder & therefore work against Person A

As hard as it is to find that true friend willing to help you bury a body, it’s even harder to find the true true friend who’ll help you create a body.

Exceptions exist in criminal gangs where e.g. everyone participating in that hit on the other gang or everyone participating in that convenience store robbery are all armed. And once somebody starts shooting they all do.

But the idea of an accomplice working with Kohberger is so far-fetched as to make me expect that anyone holding that opinion, or even a faint suspicion of that possibility, has probably been listening to waay too many CT videos and probably got the idea planted in their head by one such.

And is too stupid to be let out without adult supervision, but that’s a different thread.

An adjacent, but slightly less conspiracy mindset can easily come from people who watch too many “Crime TV” (either real or fictional) shows. Because it adds all sort of tension or “ooooohhh” factor compared to the endless sordid typical murders where a spouse gets frustrated over that one little thing and kills the other in a moment of passion.

See our discussions of the Daybell murders, or other extremely exceptional circumstances, or the convoluted murder-conspiracy in any number of TV shows and movies.

Thankfully, most of us outside the legal system will never have first-hand experience with the terrifying banal and tragic natures of most murders, so we only have the sensationalistic dramatized or fictional ones as our reference. And so many of the later lean hard into the “based on a true story” that people tend to believe that there’s so much more going on in many cases…

Which can absolutely lead someone into Conspiracy Theory Land. :face_exhaling:

It’s not completely ridiculous that more than one person could have been involved if the motive was just thrills, or an attempt to commit the “perfect crime”. Leopold and Loeb did it. However, from what I know of this case, I think there was only one perpetrator.

Every once in awhile sick fucks manage to find one another. But that really is vanishingly rare, Occam’s Razor will almost always argue against it.
