What’s all this fuss about Kiddie Fire Extinguishers not working!? Do we want a bunch of toddlers walking around, spraying fire extinguishers all over the place?
40 Million Kidde Fire Extinguishers Sold over Last 40 Years Recalled Safety Defect; Free Replacement
I suggest that you call in about the ones with model numbers matching. They didn’t even ask about the date code on mine.
Missed the edit window.
From the website:
“The recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017”
You have two that match model numbers listed but are older than 1973?
They have two lists. One for all the earlier brand/models (Kidde, Sears, etc), then a second list of just model numbers specifically between 2012 and 2017. Mine fall into the latter list of model numbers, but the serial numbers indicate earlier manufacture dates.
Yeah I have one where the model number was in the lower chart (4 times, for some reason) but the date stamp was 2003 so it shouldn’t be in the recall. I went ahead and filled out the form anyway (which asked for the date stamp, serial, and model number) and the system told me that my extinguisher was in the recall and I would be sent a new one in 15-20 days.
Saw this on the “joke” website Fark the other day and already filed for a replacement. Getting a new one, woohoo.
Remember: recalling 40 million in no way shape or form means Kidde is replacing 40 million. Only a fraction of people will even hear about this, let alone bother filing.
For you, or anyone else that isn’t sure, I’d suggest just filling out the form. That’s what I did when I wasn’t sure and it said they were included. I have to assume the form automatically recognizes if they are or are not part of the recall. In any case, let them figure it out.
I’m glad I caught this. A few months ago I mentioned in another thread that my 2 fire extinguishers are just about ten years old and I hate to replace them but I know it’s time. Luckily, at the beginning of the summer I picked up a 3rd and recently I got a 4th. These two are both bigger and with metal handles. So instead of replacing I just moved things around a bit. My intention was to keep the old ones a few more years, then replace them so they’d be staggered.
Luckily I didn’t get rid of them so I’ll have 2 new ones and be able to go another 10 years without having to buy more. I made add more, but 5+ might be excessive for a 1 story house.
Another thing I forgot to mention. Being that your supposed to replace these every 10-12 years. I’m surprised they’re offering to send out replacements for ones almost 45 years old.
Would anyone blame them if they offered to replace all the ones less than 10-12 years old and told everyone else to discard them and buy a new one (maybe even send them a $5 coupon)?
I have to assume that they’re doing that for the goodwill on the assumption that they’ll be replacing very few old ones.
I just replaced my old one, and the new one is on the list. So I get to shoot off another one!
Wow, could you be more dickish? They were UL listed fire extinguishers, approved for household use. Why should a consumer assume there was going to be something wrong with them?
Wow, could you be any more wooshed?
I have 2 of them, one included in the recall.
Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for the heads up. I’ll be getting 7 new fire extinguishers (I’ve got a big house, with a full in-law apartment, so 2 of everything). They are 8 years old, and I was just recently wondering if it was time to replace them.
When I got home Thursday night it was here, so I’m guessing it came on Wed.
Pulled the new one out of the box, put the old into the box, taped it up, stuck the included return label on & called FedEx; they will pick it up from my porch tomorrow. Easy-peasy!
Jesus, I can’t believe I missed that. I thought he was being a dick about them being plastic. Mea culpa.
Being 50 sucks.
Thanks for the bump! I’m home sick today, so I checked my three extinguishers (basement, ground floor, second floor), they’re all Kidde, and I’ve just verified with the folks at Kidde that they’re all covered by the recall.
I got my replacement today. The nozzle on the new one looks like it’s some sort of casting.
No worries; a thread about fire extinguishers seems to call out for some wooshing, as if we’re all spraying one another.
I’m 49, for what it’s worth. Still have some growing up to do, perhaps.
I received mine too. They are definitely heavier then the originals.
