49ers' Chris Borland retiring at 24 - say what?

Never shall it be said that russian heel is a quitter. He’ll go down with that ship, regardless of the fact that it was made out of paper to begin with…

I have to admit, I checked the join date.

Also, NPR covered the history of concussion issue and the concerns about his body size. NPR!! And no, I wasn’t listening to American Public Radio Sports Beat with Avi Rosenblatt, Baljeet Choudry-Lloyd, and the Douche. It was like Fresh Air or something really la-de-dah.

I can’t blame anyone for protecting their health and he is giving the team ample notice. I just hope he is wise with his money.

Yes I did.

And it was more than one article from a reliable source that stated he had no known history of head injuries. I dont what else you want from me.

And, if you really want to push the issue, while I can off my “pussy” remark since I have aquired new information which I will take at face value that he had a “supposed” concussion (Id love to see the medical record since that is again, a requirement of this thread), I feel safe in saying the guy still comes across as a bit . . . . . . “soft”.

You may want to read up a bit on CTE, and their prevalence in people with no history of recorded brain trauma (like concussions), but in repeated sub-concussive contact (like boxers, hockey players, and football players). It certainly seems that Borland doesn’t find that very real risk to be worth it, despite being considered soft by entire handfuls of Internet Tough Guys.

And bringing up anonymous ‘sources’ just sounds silly.

Yeesh, this goal post shifting about medical records again.

Simple links will suffice - where are these supposed “articles” affirmatively stating he had no such history? A check of browser history should pull those right up.

No need to bring back moon rocks when people are simply asking to see the rocket.

Again, I don’t get this “tough guy” thing. I never said I was tough. But clearly, Chris Borland is too “soft” to play in the NFL. People are heaping praises on him when in reality he is a bit of a coward.

Thats maybe the third time you’ve used that phrase. Do you have any others in your vocabulary?

If I get time, I will, at MY convenience. I don’t need to answer to you, or anyone else here, and fuck you to any poster here that accuses me of lying or using “anonymous” links.

Shut the fuck up. You are an annoying pest and a nerd.

You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Borland replaced an All-Pro middle linebacker (Patrick Willis, who also retired this off-season) midway through his rookie year and did an admirable job at it. He finished the season with 84 solo tackles in 8 starts - that’s a hell of a performance for any player, let alone a rookie.

He is clearly capable of playing in the NFL, but has chosen not to. I don’t know where you’re getting the idea that he’s soft, but it’s coming from you and not from anything Borland did.

This is a warning, insults are not allowed in this forum, only in the “BBQ Pit”.
Don’t call others names again.

 Can’t say I blame him for not wanting to end up like Darryl Talley.

“Other people should live their lives in order to maximize my amusement”

He doesn’t owe anybody anything. He’s not flaking out in the middle of a season. He got paid well to do a job for a year, and did a pretty good job of it. And now he’s deciding that he doesn’t want to do that job anymore. He’s given his team plenty of notice. It’s certainly fine to say “if I was in his position I would have kept playing” but only he can decide what is best for himself, and he has no obligation to listen to anybody else.

This is a completely misguided and unsupported assertion. How is evaluating the long term risks and coming to a different conclusion than you would soft and cowardly? Are you currently risking long term brain damage as part of your job?

Risking?

No, just burns from the deep fryer, most likely.

Quid pro quo.

Other posters have provided evidence of their assertions when asked. You want an exception made in your case to avoid extending the same courtesy.

I have no problems if you don’t get around to it. That’s your choice, just like Borland’s was his. Just as it is our choice to lend arguments exactly the credence they merit based on any actual evidence provided rather than invective.

Something that also didn’t get brought up explicitly in this thread, though it’s implicit in many responses is that he spent a few games on IR even in his lone rookie season with an ankle injury. Fortunately (though is any injury fortunate?), his season ending injury occurred in December and not September and when the 49ers were already out of the playoff picture.

He also missed nearly his entire sophomore college season at Wisconsin due to season ending injury, though he got that year reclassified as an injury redshirt year.

While they’re not exactly the same as concussions, and while injuries are common in football, he’s not quitting after a mostly healthy and injury free football career. You’re not a 23 year old NFL rookie without losing a year or two somehow.

Well, uh, what would you call sources that have been given no name?

Borland is voluntarily returning 3/4 of his signing bonus since he only played 1 out of the 4 years on the mandatory 3rd round pick contract. Although SF would probably gotten the money back if they’d decided to pursue it.
