50 Best Albums of 2007

Getting closer to NYE; time for an update. First, the The Go Find album on the original list should be Stars on the Wall not Miami. Next, here are the albums I either missed or came out after my first post that should have been up for consideration.

Daft Punk – Alive 2007 (this album is insanely freaking great, I wish I could go back in time and be at that show)
Gorillaz – D-sides
Hot Chip – DJ Kicks
Lupe Fiasco – The Cool (no sophomore slump for this guy; I’m seriously looking foward to CRS, his project with Kanye and Pharrell)
Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Wu-Tang Clan – 8 Diagrams
Blue Foundation - Life of a Ghost
Bruce Springsteen - Magic

I thought this was a great year for music. I can still recall with horror the years when boy bands ruled the airwaves. The recovery is complete; Justin Timberlake is now a hip hop artist, and he’s good! If you told me that in 1999 I would have called you a liar.

I forgot Los Campesinos! - Sticking Fingers Into Sockets. Last one I swear!

No offense, but there are now 59 albums on your “best of 2007 list”; I might question just how critical your listening was.

Ya, I thought all music from the last 25 years sucks. Somebody got some 'splaining to do.

Let’s start a list of the top 500 albums of 2007. Just the very best 500 you bought this year. Okay, 501, if you liked Springteen’s “Magic” as much as me. But no more than 501 of your very favorites.

OK, so you’ve got some fairly decent backpacker hip hop…

Why no Sage Francis- Human the Death Dance

Not his best, but definitely not his worst. The last half of the album is maybe his best work to date. Why is this guy never talked about? He’s an unbelevable wordsmith.

Small sample of “Water Line”-obviously about Katrina

And start fillin’ sand bags as I stare at the moon
And let the thoughts flood, blessed are those who are damned
When the levy broke, how many choked on the steps of a slow dance
A staircase to a hug with no hands
Accountability hung out to dry on the line of command

and “Black Out in White Night”

The obvious answer isn’t standing on your face with stilettos on
If you pop the question wrong
Every song’s a post afterthought, but I won’t grab the chalk
To outline my body of work
Toe tags get caught in my teeth 'cause my foot is in my mouth
And the spurs are in my words, so my tongue can’t dismount

Well, I decided to put together a more-or-less complete list of albums I’ve listened to more than around 5 times. That’s about the only way I could think to begin to compare all the amazing music that came out this year. Besides the top ten, that is more or less ordered in how much the albums meant to me, the rest are just listed in anyway I could remember them.

:dubious:

I don’t know how many albums I listened to that were released this year, but it has to be more than 200. But, then I only listen to stuff that I think I’ll like so it makes sense that I like a good portion of them. By the way, if your wondering how I get to hear so many albums, I recommend you makes friends with a DJ at your local college radio station.

I’m that more people haven’t put The Fratellis on their list, especially those of you who had Favorite Worst Nightmare by the Arctic Monkeys on the list. I love the Arctic Monkeys, but Costello Music is light years better than FWN.

An awesome album. It is my favorite of the year. Other than that, I really haven’t bought many new albums this year. Let’s see…

  1. Velvet Revolver - Libertad
  2. Kaiser Chiefs - Yours Truly, Angry Mob (did this come out in '07 or '06? I forget)
  3. Incubus - Light Grenades
  4. Rush - Snakes and Arrows
  5. White Stripes - Icky Thump
  6. Kasabian - Empire (once again, not sure on the release date for this one, but I bought it earlier this year)
  7. Mew - And the Glass Handed Kites (this may be from '06 too, I’m not sure)

I think that’s all that I bought this year that was actually released this year. My last trip to the music store yeilded me a copy of The Decemberists - Crane Wife and The Beatles - Srt. Pepper’s…and I KNOW those aren’t from '07.

In case anyone wants to know, my top five albums of the decade are:

  1. White Stripes - White Blood Cells
  2. Wolfmother - Wolfmother
  3. Snow Patrol - Final Straw
  4. Velvet Revolver - Libertad
  5. Kaiser Cheifs - Yours Truly, Angry Mob

I came in this thread to suggest it. Glad it made the first post. A fantastic album. Especially “Little Motel” and “We Missed the Boat”.

I can do a top 5 list of 2007.
*1. Timbaland - Shock Value
*1. DJ Khaled - We the Best
2. 50 Cent - Curtis
3. DJ Clue - Its Me Snitches
4. Remy Ma - The BX Files
5. Britney Spears - Blackout
