I was greatly relieved to read that [Trump’s efforts to strip job protections from federal employees](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-civil-service-biden/2021/01/18/5daf34c4-59b3-11eb-b8bd-ee36b1cd18bf_story.html) – potentially allowing him to fire hundreds or thousands of career civil service personnel without cause – looks like it has fallen apart because the Administration couldn’t get their shit together. This was an underreported but grave threat, which would have let Trump go scorched earth on his way out by firing all of the scientists, regulators, lawyers and others in the government whose professionalism and ethical behavior impeded his attempts to subvert the instruments of state. The flip side of the effort is it would also have allowed the Administration to circumvent civil service hiring requirements and let Trump political appointees “burrow in” to the federal bureaucracy as career employees. With 38 hours to go, it looks like this has not happened to a significant extent. ---

You are so right. This has been an enormous threat to stability in government. Few people understand that civil service protections were enacted precisely for the purpose of avoiding nepotism, favoritism and political motivations in hiring and firing of employees meant to serve the citizens of this country and no one else. Like you, I am very relieved Trump and his minions was unable to accomplish this goal. They’ve done more than enough damage as is. ---

In any case, we are now in the last full day of the orange presidency, Eastern Standard Time. Should be an interesting one, too. Supposedly around 100 pardons are going to be announced. At last report, none of them are for Agent Orange himself, probably because he’s been strongly advised that (a) it would be an admission of guilt, and (b) wouldn’t stand up to legal scrutiny anyway. ---
