So, when did Geraldo sell out, anyway? Before or after he got divorced from Vonnegut’s daughter? Certainly before the Al Capone’s Safe Fizzle.

He was always sleazy and self aggrandizing, but Capone’s vault was his shark jump. The Satanic Panic remains his most disgusting moment imo and his most harmful as it ultimately destroyed lives by convincing (admittedly gullible and stupid) people there really was a satanic underground and that “recovered memories” were all valid.

Agreed on all counts, but was Capone’s vault really his fault? I don’t remember all of the details of it, just that it was EMPTY. Right?

Capone’s vault turned out to be empty cellars IIRC. It was they hype around it and the build up as they eventually opened up empty cellars. It showed Geraldo as a salesman, not a newsman.

He was a consumer affairs reporter for WABC in New York. Did a great expose of Willowbrook State School. He spoke at my HS graduation (pretty standard Follow Your Dream boilerplate as I remember). I guess he later decided to become famous. Too bad, that Willowbrook story was some good journalism.
