For 1970’s music nobody’s mentioned yet, I suggest: –anything by Stevie Wonder (with the possible exception of _Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants_) who, artistically, had an incredible run during the decade; –any good Philly Soul (e.g., O’ Jays, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Spinners, etc.). This was dance music before disco came along and removed the soul; –“What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye; –“Superfly” soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield; and –The Clash (their debut album, “Give 'Em Enough Rope,” and “London Calling” were all released during the decade). ---

Let us not forget. . . Frank Zappa (Of the 13 albums he released in the 70s, the gott haves are OVERNITE SENSATION 1973, APOSTROPHE 1974, ZAPPA IN NEW YORK 1978, SHEIK YERBOUTI 1979, and JOE’S GARAGE 1979) Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, Captain Beefheart (TROUT MASK REPLICA should be mandatory for every CD collection), Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, As already mentioned, The Grateful Dead, although it should be noted that their studio albums are really just demos, and their true musical genius for improvisation comes through only on live albums and concert bootlegs. Must haves: Europe 72, Blues for Allah, Wake of the Flood, From The Mars Hotel, and all of the Dick’s Picks releases. And I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Led Zeppelin! ---
