I swear, every time I blink my eye that thread has another 20 posts in it. I think the posts are reproducing by spontaneous generation.
He’s a standard-issue crackpot. These things go in stages; right now, he’s past the point of trying to defend his pet theory and is just rambling on about how mathematicians don’t understand the real world and what’s really going on in math. Crackpots in relativity or QM behave exactly the same, claiming that physicists are too wrapped up in ivory-tower mathematical nonsense to understand the simple, practical, intuitive ideas that disprove relativity/QM/whatever. (Blaming the NSA is a bit unusual, though; usually the capitalized Scientific Establishment is responsible for suppressing the totally brilliant ideas of the crackpot.)
Give it a couple of days for the novelty wear off, and the thread will die out again.
Can I just say, LOL.
You are far more patient that I am.
(And yeah, I think he’s a troll too.)
…and now he’s been banned. Huzzah!
Can I just say LOL again?
HAHAHA OH WOW
Did anyone catch that last post before the thread was locked? It’s since been deleted… but, uh… yeah. Comedy gold.
Are you aware of the Federal regulations against threats of cannibalism, sir? Where are your servers located?
What a goofy, strange guy…
Shit? Where’s 7s going to get his sick kicks now?
Just glancing in, and I noticed he ridiculed an infinite approximation to pi. He said “there isn’t any pattern” to pi.
But there are a number of infinite series that sum to pi, and which follow very clear patterns.
1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + 1/9 … sums to pi/4. The pattern is obvious.
The guy was not only rude and nasty, but terribly ignorant.
that would be
placed in the null set.
I’ve not said LOL for a while.
So LOL!
The thread’s been re-opened. But I don’t suppose that post has been reinstated, has it?
CT made an alt (aptly named ctproxy1) and made some allegations along the lines of “straightdope is banning him to hide affiliations with criminals”. It was hilarious.
Okay, that was…interesting.
So can we make a sticky in GQ now that says:
"Yes really, .9999…=1. Why? Here’s why:
<include one of the many excellent proofs supplied in that thread>
Don’t agree with it? Sorry, tough fucking titties, you’re wrong and this is NOT the place for you. Go look at some porn or something."
As an option we can include something about the Monty Hall thing (and even the airplanes/treadmills clusterfuck) and the GQ mods can get some well-deserved rest.
Is .999… equal to a bullet fired on a treadmill while Monty Hall drops a door?
Yep, because .3333*3 is equal to the mystical constant determined by a butterfly flapping it’s wings in Two Egg and affecting the weather in China.
I like that idea, but nothing beyond an outright ban on such threads will prevent them from popping up. Like you said, there were already many excellent proofs supplied in that thread. No one is going to be able to convince an idiot who believes that probability is irrelevant because perfect dice don’t converge in the real world (whatever the fuck that means); that the NSA is keeping the Computer to Science 101 idea of recursion from the public (except for him, of course) and monitoring the board for mentions of it; and that the gamma factor in special relativity means the universe explodes if 0.999… = 1 because of something about precision. All you can do is point and laugh at the idiots and trolls.
Speaking of which, this clusterderp was beautiful:
Add ‘Time’ before ‘cube’, set the quote in a 40-point font, and it would fit in perfectly on the Time Cube page.
If I may quote the The Great Unwashed
The pattern held:
1] Make claim that’s reasonable enough
2] Staunchly hold to the claim
3] Argue a wide variety of irrelevant points
4] Turns nasty
5] Bitch-slaps moderator
6] Gets banned
Watch for this again, he’ll be back under another username.
