What area code is that 867-5309 number in? Oh, I see. 212. IUnfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint), exchange 530 in _area code_ 867 is [not in use](http://www.cnac.ca/ac867.htm). When they were putting new area codes in the Toronto area, I was hoping we’d get area code 234. Then I would have tried my damndest to get the number 1-234-567-8901. 🙂 ---

It’s hard to believe that people actually _want_ that number. Here’s what “snopes” has to say about it. There was a segment on last night’s news about this auction. It turns out the seller \* does not own the phone number.\* All phone numbers are owned by the phone company, and you cannot sell them. I bet the high bidders know that. ---

I was in third grade when _867-5309_ started hitting the airwaves. In our area (Fort Bragg, NC), that was the phone number of a grade school (our home phone at the time was 867-4622).
