94th Academy Awards Nominees are out. Let's discuss

Agreed. Yet I can’t bring myself to feel a bit of sympathy for Chris Rock.

Eh…love him or hate him the Oscars hired Rock to do what Rock does. Rock did what Rock does and got rocked for it.

I’m amused that people think that Smith’s reputation will be hurt by this.

I would think Chris Rock should apologize first for insulting Jada.

The Oscars have been held in the same place since 2001, except for last year.

How did he insult her? He referred to her as GI Jane. Smith has shaved her head like Demi Moore did when she starred in the movie GI Jane.

It could be seen as mocking her for having a hair loss condition (alopecia) which can be devastating for sufferers.

It’s unclear whether Chris Rock was aware of the reason why her head was shaved - maybe he thought it was a fashion statement? And comedians often go over the line when adlibbing. Hard to say what the deal was here.

I am well aware of what he was referencing. My understanding is that Jada is quite self-conscious about her hair loss and probably didn’t have any idea her hair loss was going to become the butt of a joke, at least judging by the expression on her face. Will seemed to laugh it off until he saw her face and then reacted accordingly. I’d say Chris Rock stuck his foot in his mouth big time, and I like both actors a lot. I think Will overreacted but I can understand why he did.

If someone had made fun of my wife’s looks back when she had lost all her hair from chemo, I would have done more than just slap him.

Was what he said insensitive? Sure. But I don’t see the insult in what he actually said. He referenced her looks by comparing her to a pretty famous role. He didn’t say she looked bad or good.

He directed people’s attention to something she obviously felt self-conscious about. You don’t do that.

Did Aaron Sorkin run on stage and punch someone? Did Leo DiCaprio run on stage and punch someone? Did anyone from The Power of the Dog or The Last Duel or Being the Ricardos run up on stage and punch someone? No, because everyone else there knows that the presenters make jokes about the nominees/films/famous people in the audience.

She “obviously” felt so self-conscious that she shaved her head and sat in full display front and center?

Really? She attended an event watched by millions of people with her head shaved. That doesn’t scream self-conscious to me. Frankly, I thought she looked really good. Even Will laughed at first before he realised his wife was pissed. As far as I’m concerned he totally overreacted and committed assault in front of millions of witnesses.

edit: ninja’d…

What, she has some sort of obligation to hide her disability? She doesn’t look perfect so she shouldn’t be out in public?

Nobody has said anything like that. You said she obviously felt self-conscious. It certainly wasn’t obvious to me…

You said she “obviously” was self-conscious about her hair. Nothing from what I saw of her on the red carpet or sitting right up front gave any kind of impression of her being “obviously self-conscious.” She looked lovely and seemed to be totally confident in her look.

He was commenting on her baldness. Why did he need to comment on her appearance at all? I think you are perhaps being obtuse about his comments. There’s nothing to defend here. He shouldn’t have said it—something I’m sure he realizes now.

Jada wasn’t a nominee. Why should be the target of a bad joke?

Because she’s a famous celebrity sitting in the front row. That’s just how these award shows go. Everyone attending knows this. And the bad joke would have been completely forgotten by everyone the moment after it was spoken had Will not gone psycho. Now it’ll always be attached to her.
And Will was actually laughing at the joke at first.
