**flood** , they are indeed both spreads – I linked to a site on vegemite above, and marmite is a similar (although different) yeast spread product. And lest anyone not know my yeast spread preferences, I strongly prefer vegemite. ---

The difference between the two being that marmite is an extract from yeast grown on beef broth, whereas vegemite uses yeast grown on veggie broth. I don’t know how to describe the taste of either. They are both good, though marmite is better. 🙂 ---

I bought a jar of Vegemite once, to see what it was like. I opened it – and it looked and smelled EXACTLY like my cat’s hairball medicine. Except even the cat wouldn’t eat it. ---

**flood** , if you do ever get the chance and/or desire to try them, it’s best to use them sparingly. I think that some of the adverse reactions (errr… that’s as in “dislike”, not as in “hives”) that newcomers have to them is from slathering them on like peanut butter. Not a good plan for a novice. 🙂 And for the record… Marmite is a foodstuff… Vegemite is better used as axle grease. ---

Hmmm. This is quite interesting. I went to a newly-opened whole food-type store today and bought a jar of Vegemite. I’ve got some Marmite in the cupboard and I like it quite a lot. But I was not aware of the controversy surrounding said products. I think some experimentation is in order. ---

For some reason I’ve always associated Vegemite with Oz (which is right), and Marmite with NZ (which is wrong – it’s british), though both are very popular here. Oh… _drool_ Marmite and butter on piping hot Vogels toast… (Haven’t seen bread by that name in the US, but I’m sure something similar would be available – totally wholegrain with a rather open “cratered” texture to the bread… a bit like an english muffin, and a bit like a crumpet… if you can imagine that in wholegrain). Haven’t tried Vegemite like that, but if you’re a big V fan, and can’t have muffins you might find some similarly acceptable grain-loaf locally. ---

Marmite is the growing up spread you never grow out of. I’m living in Canada now and it is very expensive as is Vegemite and Bovril. I ask my family to send me some for birthdays and Christmas 🙂 mmmmm. For some reason I can’t find any true Canadians who enjoy it. Weird ---

Am I the only one reading the menu on the **Ye Olde King’s Head** website **Johnny L.A.** linked to and totally drooling? I’d pay _$1000_ dollars for a jar of Vegemite if I could have a breakfast like _that_! And on the Vegemite and Marmite… My best friend’s Mom puts a tablespoon of either into her beef stews to give them a richer flavour. It really works well; I could really tell the difference when she left it out. And on toast?
