I saw a beautiful chrome or polished stainless kitchen can that was extravagantly priced. I really need a better looking one because my old Walmart one has seen better days, but it’s pretty hard to fork over big bucks for something I’m going put fuzzy tomatoes in.

I played with one at the store. The butterfly opening whispers open, whispers closed. It’s sooo pretty & pleasing to the eye. It’s just NICE in an intangible way.

I am not, however, willing to pay $180 for one, so I just look at it everytime I’m at that store. Sigh.

What’s wrong with plastic bags from the supermarket these days? They carry home your shopping and then you put your rubbish in em and turf em out for collection. Job done.

Progress? Bah! I’m gonna go play with my abacus. 😛

**AndyPolley** , he doesn’t have a dog. Also, he’s living in a lousy area of Huntington, sort of near Centerport, where it’s not a good idea to have expensive items.

As far as we all know, there’s no good reason for him to have spent so much money on this one item. He’s pouring a lot of money into fixing up the house as it is, why throw $200 away on a trash can?

That butterfly can looks like it was made by [Simple Human](http://www.simplehuman.com/products/trash-cans/index.html). We have one of their round stainless steel cans in our pantry. I bought it at Lowe’s, the hardware/lumber store, can’t remember how much it cost, but I’m sure it wasn’t over $100; probably more like $70. I wanted a nice durable steel trash can, is all.

The butterfly top is nice if you want to keep the can under an overhanging counter that would be too tall to accommodate an ordinary swing-up top. We keep our dog’s food and water under our overhang, so we didn’t need the butterfly.

Hey! I’ll be in Centerport tomorrow. I’ll go cruising for super-incredible-cool garbage cans. I’ll take pictures!

Ah…no I won’t. Sorry.

So he just wants a nice trash can, eh? We all have our quirks. I hope he’s happy with his can’s performance.

**Revtim** , I’ve had my trash cans stolen too. What’s worse, I had 3 of them with my house # spary-painted on them (classy move–I know.) The thief was clearly either deranged or out to get me.

I couldn’t ever see spending that much on a trash can, because the city I live in uses inmate labor on the garbage trucks. I think these guys compete to see who can throw the cans the longest distance from the house they came from, and they must get extra points for the number of wheels they manage to remove. I saw a Sears brand trash can similar to mine the other day with the bottom completely busted out of it.

Does anyone know if Sears sells replacement wheels for their trash cans?

Our local costco has that one for $40. I admire it greatly, but can’t bring myself to spend the $$.

I put my house # on the new one with a Sharpie, so far so good. It only happened to me once in 6 years, so I likely don’t have a “trash stalker” like you have… 😉

Maybe he just wanted a cool looking trash can, sort of an impulse buy, except instead of a candy bar it’s a two hundred dollar trash can. Some of my friends do that and they don’t have extra cash just hanging around.

Or perhaps his place is like mine-- my current apartment has nowhere to put a trash can except in one of the cabinets or in the entryway. I’ve gotten a doohickey for one of the cabinet doors that holds trash bags (grocery bags fit perfectly, so yay, it appeases the miser in me). If I’d had to keep the can out in the hallway, I’d have definitely gotten something extremely spiffy looking. I would hate to have to see some ucky ol’ plastic can several times a day or have guests see it, either. Rubbermaid plastic cans pick up smudges and stains quickly, plus that bag hanging over the top is not attractive.

Of course I’m so picky about stuff like that, it borders on a neurosis. Oh heck, I crossed the neurosis border somewhere back in high school. There’s no fighting it though, my stuff has to be clean, aesthetically pleasing, and always in it’s proper place. Here’s hoping your boyfriend’s reason for the trash can isn’t the same as mine would be.

We have the soft touch can that is featured underneath the butterfly top on their webpage. I think we paid 120 bucks or so for it, but only because we wanted stainless to match the rest of the kitchen, and were sick of the el cheapo cans breaking.

I can however, recommend that brands customer service department. I accidentally set the can lid on our (overhot, broken) oven and melted the latching mechanism. I called the company trying to order a new lid to replace the melted one, and they sent a new one free of charge.

We bought a nice chrome one from Simplehuman too - but we found it at Bed Bath and Beyond, in the clearance section (there was a tiny dent in the back) for $5.00! Of course, the nice little package of insert bags you have to buy cost $11.00 but…

If some of you had your way, we’d all still be in caves smashing rocks together. Here you go:

A [$200 trash can](http://www.trashcandepot.com/product_info.php/cPath/691/products_id/4841) with infrared sensors and onboard computer.

For public use there’s always this [solar-powered trash can](http://www.seahorsepower.com/products.html) or [wireless trashcans](http://www.gcn.com/vol1_no1/daily-updates/35466-1.html) .

And still in the experimental phase are [multimedia trashcans](http://www.urban-atmospheres.net/UrbanProbes/Jetsam/artifact.htm).

Let me guess. You’re one of those people that bought a DVD player for $500 when they first came out, and now you’re all pissed off that people who sensibly waited a few years can pick them up for $50 or less now, right?

It’s on sale for $90, according to that website. Now are you persuaded you really, really need it? 😃

I have a nice tall metal kitchen trash can with a swinging lid that I bought some years ago at some la-di-da kitchen store, where it was regularly $90; by purchasing the floor model and pointing out a couple of tiny scratches on it, I got it for $50. That was 12 years ago, and it’s still going strong, so I consider my money to have been well spent.
