“Would the father like to hold the baby?” naively asks the woman in white. First things first. After the checkup, and all is fine. After the mother is recovered, Anya is here. Just right away, she takes to the breast. Hungry and healthy and healthy and hungry. She drinks! She rests. She sucks again and again, until exhausted with the work, she falls asleep, a few hours into this world.
“Would the father like to hold the baby?” asks the nurse. No, the father does not just want to hold the baby, the father wants to cuddle her forever. Never let her go. Never lose her from his sight. If he holds her hard enough, long enough, she will be real. No, she already is real, here in his arms.
Fingers tingle, and the chest shakes. This is how to love a child. born to live. This is how to hold a child who can be held.
She cries, and I laugh. So sweet to hear your child’s cries. So sweet to hear your child’s sighs.
Ten fingers and ten toes. Healthy lungs and a beautiful nose. She lives! She cries! She kicks and she sleeps. She’s a baby, a healthy living baby. She’ll stay. She’ll be with us.
How many nights did I wait for her cry? How many days did I listen for her laugh?
A girl. My girl. Our girl. The mind spins. She is here. She’s healthy. She’ll live.
“Would the father like to hold the baby?” asks this, a new nurse, but not the second one, who knew us from our last stay. She knows. She knows that this father will never let go.
