Not many people know about this but in 2005 an Australian research institute conducted a[study about missing teaspoons](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1322240/)in their break rooms. It turned out that over a five month period 56 out of 70 teaspoons (that’s 80% of the teaspoons) went missing. This study fascinates me, because where did those teaspoons go? Was it one guy playing a joke on the researchers or is there an endemic problem with teaspoon loss in research institutes around the world that nobody is talking about? ---

My workplace recently experienced a teaspoon shortage. Mrs. andros argues that people are simply taking them home after eating a meal and packing up their containers and such. But that makes me wonder why forks don’t suffer the same fate. Is office food more likely to be spoon food? . ---

Why? Because I linger a little more over coffee than other passengers in business class. In preparation for landing, the flight attendants have better things to do than account for teaspoons on meal trays. I invariably end up with one, which ends up in my pocket, for safety’s sake. They’re nice spoons, I must say. Good, solid, stainless steel. Trust me, I know spoons. 😃 ---

In our house we were losing a lot of forks. We figured out it’s because we leave them in the take out containers on the way to the kitchen, then my (34 year old) daughter would unintentionally throw them out with the container. ---

I think this is what I must have done. I’m down by two forks from the set I just bought in August. I’m trying to be much more careful now that I’ve realized this is the likely problem. ---

Having been in food service for a couple decades, and seeing what happens to all the missing silverware there, I would say that the teaspoons end up in the garbage. It’s a tragedy of the commons problem. You pour your coffee, then open up packs of sugar and cream to put in the coffee. You then grab a spoon to stir it all up. You now have a mix of waste and of silverware. It would take a moment’s notice and effort to separate them before depositing in the trash, which is far too much work for someone who does not care. ---

I don’t know, for some reason I attract odd forks and spoons. We don’t have take out alot, we are too far from town. If we eat out we eat at the restuarant. I am not sure where these odd things come from. I have 2 nice round bowl spoons I love. I think they came from my Daddy’s house when I cleared it after his death. I have a fork that is stamped "Navy’, I have no idea where that came from My DIL just grabbed 2 forks from my dishwasher rack, that she says are hers. My question is how do these items migrate. I promise I am not pilfering utensils from peoples houses. I have a box of silver (real) that I have collected from flea markets and garage sales. I have a plan to make something with some day. ---

The forks must teleport from my kitchen. I gave up, I totally use disposable cutlery lately because my forks keep disappearing. I know I used to have a normal amount of forks but right now I have 2. I have like 25 knifes and 50 spoons but only 2 forks. ---

When Mr.Wrekker was still working and taking a lunch a few times a week, I never got the containers back. Or sometimes I got a container that wasn’t ours. I was so happy when Ziploc put the disposable ones out. But me being me, I started lamenting the loss of them, they were highly reusable. It just doesn’t pay to be me.At.All.
