But since there’s no way to convey tone of voice in print, if you don’t use them you take the risk of people taking what you say at face value and not understanding when you are joking. ---

Yes, I thought Scylla was joking; that’s why I didn’t report it. But I still thought, and think, that it was a nasty sort of joke. To me, “I like you better sedated” reeks of “you ought to be drugged into submission.” “I like you better half asleep” wouldn’t have had that connotation at all; but it also would have made no sense, because Scylla had been vehemently objecting to something I’d posted, and I’d blamed my posting it on my having not been awake enough to understand what I was responding to. Obviously Scylla didn’t like me better half asleep. ---
