Most people don’t shit themselves with fear at the prospect of having to leave their house without being strapped. That’s not a healthy level of fear. We don’t live in the wild west and I personally am glad we don’t. Do we really want to go back to that world, where all that matters is how fast your draw is, and how little regard you have for the lives of other humans?

I’ve lived on the south side of Chicago my whole life and I have never once left my house to enter the world and felt afraid that I was going to be attacked while I was out there. It must be really stressful and unhappy to live life constantly afraid of everyone like that.

Do you think everyone in England is more brave than you because they all leave the house every day without having a gun? How do you suppose they cope with all of that fear?

If you could show a higher incidence of shooting and gun crime as a result of legal carry, I would be inclined to take your hyperventilation seriously but everything we have read shows that people with carry permits are more law abiding than the average citizen and that gun crime does NOT increase as more carry concealed permits are issued (and some people argue that crime goes down).

And I don’t buy that gun control means only the bad guys are armed and dangerous. As a standard citizen of the UK you can’t own a handgun for any reason. I assume that the criminals we have here don’t play by the rules and so remain free to obtain handguns and so fleece and kill the public at will. And yet they don’t.

You don’t have 300 million guns floating around in circulation.

I’d suggest that simply by having less guns overall we lower the risk for everyone. Criminals and victims alike, I’m quite comfortable with that. If someone is going to rob me I’d be happier knowing that they reckon a knife gives them the edge (ha!) rather than a gun.

That wouldn’t be true in the USA, not for many decades and several generations.

Right. But there is no moral onus against the killing of living things. We should be able to kill and eat living things with no suggestion that there is some grave moral wrong attached thereto.

Assume, for sake of argument, identical. You point and shoot and get exactly the same effect as an AR-15, only the target can get up again 15 minutes later.

Yeah, then I’d probably be OK with it. I’d probably want cops carrying them too. The point behind using a gun in self defense is to defend yourself not to kill the other guy. The only time I ever felt that threat of lethal force was important was during the LA riots when it was a deterrent. I’m not sure being stunned for 15 minutes would have had the same deterrent effect (and we didn’t end up killing anybody).

I could care less whether there’s an element of fear involved on the part of the person carrying a gun around in public.

Because if I see someone in a public place with a gun, there will damned sure be an element of fear on my part.

Someone in the blogosphere recently suggested that the proper response to someone carrying a gun into a place of business you’re patronizing is to simply leave. Hell, yeah. I’m out of there, as quietly and unobtrusively as possible. If I’m in the middle of a restaurant meal, I’m not finishing it, I’m not waiting for the check, I’m not passing Go, I’m not collecting $200. I’m just sliding towards the door, and hoping to get out before I’m noticed.

Because I certainly can’t distinguish at a glance between a Responsible Gun Owner[sup]TM[/sup] and someone who wants to go out in a blaze of glory, taking a bunch of people with him.

Yeah, that’s a pretty stupid response and you should go to jail if you consistently skip out on tabs in parts of the country where people carry guns on a regular basis.

Speaking of stupidity, this post is a rich vein to mine.

Just to pick on one before I get back to work:

Where do you get that from? We stay indoors during thunderstorms not because we assume we’ll get hit by lightning if we go outside, but because there’s certainly a risk of being zapped if we go outside that isn’t there if we stay inside - a risk that is generally unnecessary to take.

Same thing with people who carry guns in public. I don’t assume someone carrying a gun will attack me, but he is bringing a risk into my life that wouldn’t be there if he weren’t carrying, and AFAIAC, it’s unnecessary and unreasonable for him to foist that risk on me.

And you think its a grave enough risk to run out on your check?

Pickaxes are a good illustration of the point I’m making. Pickaxes are inherently dangerous–they are heavy, sharp pieces of metal. But pickaxes are designed to break rocks. A good pickaxe is dangerous only incidentally to its purpose, and a pick designed for killing looks substantially different from a pick designed for stone.

In other words:

Here is a hammer for sledging, here is a hammer for killing people.

Here is a gun for hunting, and here is a gun for killing people.

This whole thing was kinda funny.

The open carry group was taking its monthly stroll around the Capitol building. They were confronted by 3 or 4 topless women. There was some arguing between the two groups. The open carry group at one point tried to duck into a restaurant to get away from the women (I guess).

The open carry group claimed the women were from an anti open carry group called MDA, or Moms Demand Action. The topless women said they were not from MDA.

The open carry group called the topless women “skanky topless libtards” and “provocateurs” but were most upset by the fact that topless women got top billing on the news that night, instead of the open carry group.
