Yes, we all know that chocolate, that magical, depressingly calorie-filled but nonetheless delectable confection can improve a mood. However, a [study on aspirin](http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061114/hl_nm/heart_chocolate_dc) performed at renowned Johns Hopkins University has discovered, quite by accident, that there is a medicinal benefit to chocolate that can help avoid a heart attack in a similar way.

> [@Johns Hopkins Study](#):
>
> They were so addicted, they just could not give up their favorite daily snack – not even in the interest of science.
>
> But chocolate lovers who flunked out of a Johns Hopkins University study on aspirin and heart disease helped researchers stumble on an explanation of why a little chocolate a day can cut the risk of heart attack.
>
> It turns out chocolate, like aspirin, affects the platelets that cause blood to clot, Diane Becker of the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Medicine and her colleagues discovered.
>
> “What these chocolate offenders taught us is that the chemical in cocoa beans has a biochemical effect similar to aspirin in reducing platelet clumping, which can be fatal if a clot forms and blocks a blood vessel, causing a heart attack,” Becker said in a telephone interview.

So there you have it. There’s no longer a need to feel guilty for sneaking in that bit of extra-dietary chocolate: You’re doing it for your health!

Go chocolate!

Will it be good for my heart if I surround said chocolate with cookie dough and vanilla ice cream? 😛

That sounds like the sort of medicine I would have no trouble remembering to take. 🙂

I don’t know, but I’d wager it’s worth some study.

Mmmm. Study.

I read some similar health claims for chocolate a few months ago, but there is a catch. It only applies to dark chocolate, not milk chocolate. Above 70% cocoa.

First red wine, now chocolate.

Any more good news? Nachos prevent cancer, maybe?

I’ll take the extra red wine, if nobody’s looking…

Why on Earth would anyone want to eat any \*other \*kind of chocolate?

Personally, I recommend the Valrhona Le Noir Extra Amer (85%).
Mmmmmm…

Just wanted to point out that coronary arteries are good things, and in fact, we don’t want to keep them away. Coronary thrombosis, however, is definitely bad. But really, do people _need_ an excuse to eat chocolate? Dark chocolate is the way to go, although milk chocolate can be good. Just don’t put things like orange or banana in mine, thank you.
