A counterpoint: Chain restaurants we actually like.

Slightly? Try twice the price most of the time. :dubious:

I’d prefer Macaroni Grill any day. But that’s like saying I’d prefer Fuddruckers to McDonalds. It’s an unfair comparison.

And I’m going to point out that, in this thread, as in others, it’s not a good idea to make a generalization about a chain on the basis of experience with one or two restaurants in a given geographical area. I’m not saying that’s the basis for your statement, Stranger, but others here say something like, “I ate there once and it was awful.” Chains often are franchised, and, thus have little ability to control the result at every member of the chain. I’ve had bad food at Macaroni Grill. But I don’t tar the chain because of one poorly run restaurant (on one day at one given point in time). It might make me think twice about eating at that particular location again, depending upon how my complaint was handled.

For me, a chain as a whole is worthwhile when you can get much the same positive dining experience regularly when you eat at its locations, and it serves food you like to eat, that is a good value for the price you are paying. McDonalds is a good chain, because although the food is generally at best average in quality, you get the same thing every one you go to. Burger King is less reliable in my experience, so I tend not to eat in BK if I can help it, despite the fact I think the food generally tastes better (I prefer char-broiled to fried hamburgers).

With this in mind, I will nominate as worthwhile the following:

Bob Evans: almost always decent tasting food and reasonably priced. I wish I liked the Wildfire sauce so I could enjoy more of the menu, but they have absolutely the best yeast rolls you’ll ever have in a chain.

Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano: Scrumptuous food, reasonable prices for it (not much more than Max & Erma’s). I’d get fat on the bread and Biaggi’s version of dipping oil mixture.

Panera: Good food, eclectic sandwich menu, bakery goods at the same location. Spreading like wildfire.

I might think of one more and add it later. I did think of it. Round Table Pizza. Wish they existed in Ohio. :frowning:

And as for Olive Garden, eh, it’s not bad, and it’s relatively cheap. You want quality pasta, go someplace more expensive. You want simple and easy, go to Olive Garden. Now, by comparison, Applebee’s is simply overpriced for what you get, a very poor attempt to cash in on the TGIFriday’s mania in the 80s. And I never can help wondering what “neighborhood” it is that they think you are eating in, since they are all located in typical high-commercial/business sections of the city. :stuck_out_tongue:

Panera is decent - always very consistent. I dislike The Olive Garden as independent Italian restaurants are equally priced and the food is much better. For a fast food taco, Taco John’s is cheap and unassuming, but miles better than Taco Bell.

Americans gorge themselves because it’s a sign of how affluent we are. We eat large portions because we can. I’d eat a large portion of a really good meal, too, if I could.

Some of these are seconded…

**Five Guys.

Red Hot ‘n’ Blue.**

If the wind is blowing just right, Ruby Tuesday.

Firehouse Subs.

Five Guys is the first place I thought of when I read the thread title. We just got one a couple of weeks ago and my husband and I were there 3 times in one week! I won’t have a burger and/or fries anywhere else now. It’s pointless because now I’ve had the best.

I like Olive Garden - it’s kind of ‘safe’. I love the salad dressing, too. I know I can find something on the menu I’ll eat.

I love Lonestar Steakhouse - I like Outback too, but I think Lonestar is the better of the two.

Denny’s is good - but I only like their breakfasts and always order the same thing.

I love Arby’s - but there’s only one thing I eat there too. Same with Subwway. And KFC. And Taco Bell. And Burger King. Hmm - I am noticing a pattern.

My all time favorite is White Castle (again only one thing), and McDonald’s brings up a close second (I eat two different things at McDonald’s.)

Forgot to add Portillo’s - there are a bunch of things I eat at Portillo’s. But I don’t know if they count since they’re a Chicago area thing (aren’t they?)

No deep-fried breaded option? To me, that’s a real fish taco (aka Baja style). I love fish tacos of any sort, but the crispy breaded ones, topped with cabbage and lime-infused mayo, are the best.

On the Border has awesome, if not remotely authentic, Mexican food and not half-decent margaritas. I’ve never had a bad meal there, and it’s a good place to take the folks when they’re in town.

Red Lobster is not bad for what it is - cheap seafood. The cheddar biscuit thingies are Delicious Evil Incarnate.

Red Robin has good burgers and fries, if you can stand the screaming kids. The peppercorn burger with onion straws makes it onto my list of the five best burgers I’ve ever had.

And I’ve only been there twice, but Claim Jumper is good, even though they give you enough food to last you about three days. I’ve never had that mile-high-chocolate-pie or whatever it’s called…it scares me.

Ah Reno…the land of chain restaurants.

Nail Bunny - thanks for reminding me about Red Lobster. That’s a fave too. Scampi - mmmmmmmmm.

My nominations:

Long John Silver’s, at least around these parts, makes very good thinly battered cod and chicken planks. Except for their recent langoustine “lobster” promotion, I’ve never had anything bad there. Always made to order, the fish is hot and crispy when you get it, and they have malt vinegar on hand.

Culver’s - best burger chain in the Midwest bar none.

Baja Fresh - for chain Mexican, it’s the only choice for me.

Cheesecake Factory - it’s about ten years since I’ve eaten at one, but from what I remember, it’s the only chain sit-down joint I remember wanting to revisit.

Fuddrucker’s - I was ho-hum on this place at first, but now I’m a loyal convert

Steak and Shake - Same as above

We just had a Jersey Mikes open less than a mile from my office… not a bad lunch.

I also really likes me some Zaxby’s chicken fingers.

Edit: And Steak and Shake. Brings back some fun childhood memories.

Whenever we go to Portland, we stop at Burgerville either on the way there or on the way back. Great burgers and shakes made with decent-quality ingredients.

We’ve also enjoyed Cosi–not enough to make it a destination, but it’s a decent place to eat downtown when it’s late and we don’t want to drop a ton of cash.

Forgot one: Panda Express. I curse the day my friend introduced me to this place…sooo unhealthy but sooo good. Chow mein and orange chicken.

Stupid diet.

Oh you can say that because they deliver in Thailand! What was the number? 1011? Or was that McDonald’s number? Why yes we called them a few times when we were visiting a few months ago. :stuck_out_tongue: We are silly farangs (my brother, SO and I, my mother is a native and conceeded to us eating junk every once in a while).

In and Out Burger, Rubio’s & Souper Salad are all pretty good.

You just cracked me up. “Heaven took a crap in my mouth?” I’m stealing that to say IRL. Anyway, my name is Millit, and I LOVE Taco Bell. It’s my guilty pleasure. I get it only every few months, and usually only when I’m traveling (great road trip food). I’m going out of town tomorrow, and I’ve already planned a visit to a TB somewhere in Detroit.

For non-fast food, I’ve always liked Olive Garden and Red Lobster. The ones back in my hometown in Ohio never disappoint, though I’m willing to believe there are plenty of locations that have bad food/service. I think the reason they’re so good and so popular in Middle America is that that’s what people want. There just aren’t many decent local places where I grew up, though I do patronize the good ones. Places like OG and RL can make a killing in a small Midwestern city because that’s where people are going to go. You just don’t have people starting up cool and exciting local restaurants–at best, there are a few greasy spoons here and there and maybe an independent pizza shop. Here in NY, there’s not much incentive to do well…there are too many independent places that are doing new things and serving food prepared by people that really DO come from Italy or Mexico or India or wherever. Chains just aren’t that exciting…so they languish. But they really thrive back “home.”

I’m not ashamed to say it, but I like Pizza Hut. Excessive cheese, oil, and grease that can’t be beat. I especially love them because of one time after a while in Shanghai I was jonesing unbearably for dairy products…dairy, any dairy at all…and wandering the streets in a zombie-like shuffling stupor. I turned a corner, and there it was…Pizza Hut! American crap is always there for you when you most need it

“My ballet teacher can rub my uvula with a toothbrush herself” :stuck_out_tongue:

Wonderwall6129, you’d better become a member of this board. If you can’t afford the membership fee, I’ll pay for it for you. You’re just too good.

Oh, man. My college had a Panda Express in the student union. One year, I had Panda Express for at least one meal literally every school day. And I’m still not sick of it. I must have more.

I also loves me some Taco Bell, specifically the grilled stuffed burrito. Macaroni Grill is okay. I used to like McDonalds occasionally, but the one near my house has suddenly begun putting half an ocean’s worth of salt on their fries and I can’t even handle it. Ack.

In 'n Out and Chipotle are my favorite fast food chains. There’s a local chain here called Burrito Bandito that’s very similar to Chipotle, except they put cabbage in their burritos, which is surprisingly delicious. I like Panera a lot, and I wish we had one here, ditto Culver’s.

I used to be okay with Applebee’s, but I’m totally burned out on it because we go there EVERY SINGLE TIME we get together with my husband’s best friend and his wife, because my husband’s best friend is the weirdest guy ever and he flat-out refuses to go anywhere else.

I’ve been to Olive Garden twice, in two different cities, and both meals were just terrible.

I love Red Lobster’s cheese biscuits, and last time I was there I had a cajun blackened tilapia that was actually really good.
