This was hardly the first time warships engaged in battle with the open ocean because of radar ghosts. They were in fact firing at nothing.

No, a phony attack by definition is a fraudulent claim of an attack when it was known not to have happened, or a fully fraudulant false flag attack used as a pretext to start a war. The _Maddox_ didn’t start shooting at the open ocean knowing it wasn’t under attack. The [Gleiwitz Incident](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gleiwitz_incident) which was staged by the SS to create a pretext for the German invasion of Poland was a phony attack.
Most importantly, your central thesis, that anyone who questioned the official story at the time would have been denounced as a CT is utter horseshit. I don’t know how many times it needs to be told to you before it sinks in, but people did publicly question the official story and did publically doubt that the second attack had actually occurred at the time, and they were not shouted down as CTs.

Back in the olden days when the SD was on AOL, maybe once a month, the SD forum was advertised on the AOL opening page, and the MB would get flooded with noobs. They were often teens and they’d post questions we had already dealt with many times. I was a chat host back then. Eventually, I decided to do something about it, so, with some help from Tubadiva, I came up with a list of 50 Answers to Teen FAQs. Maybe some people might want to come up with some prepackaged answers to the CT/Truther questions so we could just tell these folks “Look, we’ve already talked this one to death. Click here.”

You’d used that term in another post, and I almost wrote to ask you about it. Thank you for this link! Fascinating (if slightly nauseating) stuff. Naively, I would have thought that CT followers would be “single issue” enthusiasts; the idea that they like to subscribe to several theories all at the same time is an eye-opener.

It is difficult- some years ago I started a thread on the USS Liberty, the topic was new to me. I hadn’t searched but the topic had already been discussed quite robustly several times. (I would add I didn’t propose any extreme theories). However, I was not a new poster and had not come here to explore a particular theory.
I believe the problem arrives with drive by posters who drop their CT’s, as a new member, and really aren’t interested in a response that disagrees with what they wish to believe. And the members here have seen the similar arguments time and again and understandably don’t wish to rehash them.
I have no answer that would not involve a lot of work for the Mods such as comparing number of previous posts to CT etc
