Haikus are the lowest form of poetry, at least when taken out of the cultural context of Japan and transplanted into the English-speaking world (I can’t/won’t speak to how they might be better in their original cultural context). I am convinced haikus have achieved currency in the English-speaking world only because they’re easy to make and grade as a cookie-cutter assignment for elementary school-age children, not unlike obsessing over grading poetry on adherence to rhyme schemes or a certain number of syllables per line. I don’t even need to get a ruling from discobot on this. ---

I take that as a compliment. You may be convinced haikus are easy to make, however, maintaining the 5, 7, 5 syllable pattern while relating each line to the others is no small feat–and I’m not even an English major. For this Engineer, it’s a damn fine poem, and I stand by my work. Now, back to my day job . . . @discobot’s just a ruined smouldering wreck. Tripler Neener. ---
