It’s a Victorian story. Hell, _two_ women die of Victorian Novel Disease\*! Dickens would have been proud!

\*(A sickness endemic to Improving Fiction where the only symptoms are a nagging cough, becoming bedridden, and taking on an air of ethereal, unearthly beauty. It might be related to tuberculosis, but only if you call it “consumption” and have no way of treating it.)
