> How is it OK to give kids with better costumes more candy? I mean, I remember growing up I had some really dinky costumes. It wasn’t cause I didn’t want to participate - it’s cause my mom literally spent her last $10 on us so we could ‘dress up’ for the night. We were lucky if she could afford face paint. One year she bought us a bag of candy instead. Looking back, I think she figured a $3 bag of cheap candy was cheaper than two costumes.

IMO coming from the same kind of household, we made do. Creative I would hope is what the costume judge of candy is looking at. If someone just walks up with the street clothes on and mask they went out with no thought. I made a helluva bum, a great scarecrow, a decent upside down guy, and one really poor year I went as a California raisin. Yes that was a black garbage bag pretty much.

Another vote for asshole. I’m stunned at the number of people who think shit like this is their business.

Dick move.

Obviously a one-time candy gift is not going to solve or create a weight problem. The effect he can have on their weight is nothing. So then he’s not doing it for their benefit. He’s doing it to pass judgement. Using a holiday to judge fat kids, like they don’t have it rough enough already, is bizarrely dickish but in a way that lets you think you’re somehow doing them a favor.

It’s unclear if he wants them to secretly realized what he was doing, just so he could rub in that judgement, or have the other kids realize what was happening so they’d be aware of it too, but even without that element it’s still strange.

Also, only somewhat related, giving out sugar free candy if it’s made with sugar alcohols is a dick move. You can only really consume them in very small amounts or you get really unpleasant side effects, and most people don’t know this. Make your friend buy a bag of sugar free candy and eat it himself.

I’m surprised at the amount of people who don’t think it’s a dick move. What’s the justification for it that doesn’t make him a dick?

Yeah, this. If you have just a bit of creativity, you can come up with a costume. You’ve got empty boxes, you’ve probably got crayons or markers or something of the sort, I certainly hope you’ve got ordinary clothing, you’ve got assorted odds and ends lying around the house. There’s bound to be some way you can put it all together to make a costume. And on the flip side, I’ve also seen some really bad costumes that I’m sure cost more than the ten bucks **CitizenPained** ’s mom could afford.

I wonder how many kids had runny shits in the middle of the night and severe stomach cramps courtesy of your acquaintance’s concern for their health?

From one piece of sugar free candy?

The OP stated “candies baggie” (which given that kids do not stop at one piece of halloween candy, suggests to me that the kids would eat more that one piece of sugar free candy when given a baggie of them).

Buy some and try some yourself under different conditions. If I have had a meal, then a malitol chocolate candy will not make a difference. If I have an empty stomach and eat anything more than a couple of malitol licorice sticks then, without getting all Lynn about it, let’s just say “watch out”. YMMV. The best analogy would be to think of a malitol candy as being similar in effect to a laxitive pill. Imagine feeding a kid a few laxitive pills at one time.

> Putting out two bowls, one labeled as being sugar-free, and letting kids choose which one to take from: Acceptable
> Giving different treats to different kids based on his perception of their weight: Not acceptable.

How about sugar candies for good kids, and malitol candies for those kids who won’t get off your lawn while waiting for the bus, or whose parents park in front of your place after you have cleared the snow so you can park there?

Next time I’m stopped up, I’m going to eat sugar free candy. I can get unclogged and still eat a bag of candy.

Honestly, this is news to me.

Ok, 2 things. One, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to have a cool costume. You jus thave to be creative. Two, I didn’t deny candy from the kids with bad cosumes, or even from kids who didn’t dress up at all.

Trick or treat is a transaction. The treat is not automatic, hence the trick part. If you put some extra creative effort into your costume, enhancing my entertainment, you get a “cool costume, buddy” and an extra Kit Kat.

Yup, just remember that unlike regular laxitives, malitol candy also causes gas, so be prepared for cramps, and take great care to be sitting on the toilet when you have to pass gas, for the Hershey candy will give you the Hershey squirts if you eat too much of it. Also keep in mind that it is not a stool softener, so if you are somewhat compacted, it will not be happy experience.

Self-righteous dick who’s bragging about his dicketry.

I’m almost speechless. Who does this? You know that at least a few kids (if not most) realized he was judging their weight. What an asshole.

And for what point? Trying to send some kind of message? Who cares if you humiliate the kids. What an ass.

He gets off on judging the fatties while at the same time convincing them he’s really trying to do it for their own benefit, is the actual reason. It’s rationalizing getting off on being a dick towards kids.
