In the old days, people believed that what was then known as _melancholia_ was caused by demonic spirits trapped inside a person’s skull, and the only way to cure it was to let the spirits out by seating a sufferer in an open field and cutting their head open. Today, thanks to the debunking of such superstitions and advances in psychiatric medicine, we now know that what in current terminology is called _major depressive disorder_ is underlain by a correctable biochemical imbalance, and evidence-based measures aimed at treating it exist and must be carried out in a woodshed. ---
