Hehe. This sounds amusing. I’m trying to picture it:

Me “These people were wrong because they went over the bounds of common decency”

Slacker “Wow, I’ve lost all respect for you because you think that”
Me “uh…OK”

That’s more or less exactly what Dex did (not over her death, but about her house) and his reputation still hasn’t recovered amongst most of the old timers who were around then. IOW, he’s paid the price for having his moment of dickatude. I am rather sure that these Serenity Now players probably were 14 year old boys (or that type) reveling in how “bad” they are. They were acting inappropriately, knew they were acting inappropriately, and are attempting to make a virtue of their inappropriateness. They should be taught a lesson, and having their accounts deleted would be a painful but ultimately harmless way to teach that lesson. As someone else said, we all do stupid shit as teenagers, and getting slapped down for it is the price we pay and the way we learn. Better to learn this way than to get some real life biker’s boot up your ass because you never learned when to keep your mouth shut or how to treat other people.

Well not to speak for **Slacker** but the fact that you called a doper an Immature asshole for merely pointing out there was a time and place for funerals and that wasn’t in game (a debatable point to be sure), told him he had the reading comprehension of a toothpick when he pointed out you were comparing a crime in real life to some people being assholes in a game to quote your own words

> [@Weirddave](#):
>
> This is the same situation.

Told him he was an immature asshole (once again for merely disagreeing with your point of view), called him a hypocrite when he refused to buy into your false parallel. You painted the whole discussion in a “You’re with me or you’re clearly a total asshole that agrees with any assholish behavior anywhere” manner which was not how the issue was being considered.

And nearly all of that took place in Cafe Society before the thread was moved where it was against the rules to offer personal insults. It’s bizarre to me how you perceive your own behavior. You weren’t calling for decency you were name calling and shit flinging.

Not that I particularly care. Just thought you might want an idea of how some people might have lost some respect for you. Hardly knowing you I didn’t have any respect for you to lose and was just hoping that it was a hot button issue for you and you lost some momentary control and could reflect upon it if pointed out.

Wow Darkhold, you should really write revisionist history, you’re really good at it. One tip though. You probably shouldn’t try it in the exact same thread that the posts you are revising are in, that’s kinda pointless since anyone can just read what I actually did say.

Certainly, but that’s showing a worst case situation where the group walked in and took over the space. And yet we are still agreed that people would be most likely to let them get away with it. But in the OP instance, the people told everyone on the boards well in advance what they were there for and why they had chosen that place. So far as I would be concerned that’s as close as you can get for making a reservation at a paintball parlor so that you aren’t bursting in on people.

Now it is contested land so for someone who didn’t know what was going on to call in his friends is one thing, but when people have specifically asked for just a few minutes–what possible reason is their to deny them that except trollery?

Darkhold, let me explain further, because one thing I that is a pet peeve of mine is when people misrepresent what I say, to wit:

#1 I said that people who don’t recognize that just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should do that thing were immature assholes. I stand by that, one of the chief hallmarks of maturity is recognizing that you are not the center of the universe, and that other people deserve respect and consideration. My language was a bit harsh for CS, and so I was warned, which is the Mods job, and I apologise for that.

#2 I did not compare a real life crime to game misbehavior, I compared two instances of people misbehaving and having the hubris to record their misbehavior to show how “bad” they are. In the RL example the behavior was a crime, in the WoW case it was pure trollery.

#3 Finally, the Phelps example is anything but a false parallel, it is in fact the exact same behavior. Both Phelps and the WoW guild disrupted a memorial service, totally within the bounds of the law, just because they can. It’s a far from fasle as can be, seeing how they are both doing the exact same thing-intruding on other people’s grief for their own agendas.

Right, you’ve been nothing but the voice of reason in this thread. No personal insults, no acting like a raging douchebag, no sir not you  . While both Phelps and Serenity Now are being jerks, context is everything. If you are holding a funeral RL, in a graveyard/funeral home/church, you have a right to expect to be able to hold your ceremony in peace. However, and this has already been said before, the e-funeral was held in a PvP zone, where attacking other players is perfectly legal and even encouraged. And the time and place were broadcasted to the general public, leaving it even more open to attack. The attack was wrong, it was jerkish, it was immature and indecent, but it was irresponsible for the mourners to hold their ceremony in such a manner that practically invited their enemies to come and make assholes of themselves. It would be like someone sending Phelps a letter along the lines of “Tomorrow at 5pm, there will be a funeral for a person who was most extremely gay in his lifetime. Detailed instructions on how to get to the funeral home are enclosed. You are welcome to come, as long as you pay your respects in a decent manner.”

Maybe the best treatment would be for themselves to get ganked over and over again. Better yet, gank them and then corpse sit and smack them again when they try to get the corpse. After a while, they might get the message.

Right. They should be punished, and someone mentioned that they ARE being punished, within the context of the game. I still don’t see any reason for Blizzard to get involved or even take notice.

Normally after they “gank” someone most people simply move on, the victim has to run back to their corpse from the nearest graveyard in order to come back to life. Corpse siting or camping is when the guy who killed you sticks around to kill you again when you get back, generally considered pretty assholish and pointless behavior since you are wasting as much time as the other person for little to no gain.

That’s not quite it either. It’s like holding a funeral on a paintball range, without getting it closed off to other groups, and then acting shocked when your nice black clothes get ruined.

We have certain expectations for behavior, and they vary by the place and the situation. What SN did was decide that the normal WoW “rules” still applied, despite this other guild’s unilateral declaration that they were holding a funeral (an odd and unusual event for a MMORPG). Not the wisest decision, but I can’t really fault people for not taking a memorial service held inside a video game seriously.

I was actually referring to the fact that they put up a public notice. Holding the funeral in a PvP zone WAS stupid, but if they had chosen a place with little traffic and only told the location to those who were directly concerned they might have been able to avoid being crashed.

Well not one for reflection I see. What exactly did I revise? Let’s review the relevant posts in this thread.

> [@](#):
>
> As someone who plays a lot of WoW, and even runs a guild of about 200 members, I try to remember that fun is fun, but the people behind the onscreen toons are real people. I have some friends that I’ve made through the game that I like quite a bit, and if one of them died it would certainly be a shock. What that alliance guild did was just wrong. They were within their rights to do it, of course, but it was still wrong. I would be within my rights to walk down a street in East Baltimore screaming “fucking niggers suck donkey dicks”, but it would still be wrong to do so. If I was Blizzard, my reaction would be simple: Serenity Now is disbanded, all characters in that guild are deleted and any allied toons that may be shown to have participated are deleted too, along with their owner’s accounts. 5.5 million people play WoW, it wouldn’t hurt Blizzard a bit. The video ends with “Yes, we are assholes”, I’d show them just how assholish life can be.

Ok you’re talking about possible punishments for people you think crossed the line. Fair enough.

> [@](#):
>
> The difference is that these guys knew what they were doing and were proud of it. THEY publicized it, not the horde guild. “Sets a dangerous precedent?” Please. Cops here in Baltimore busted a couple of guys for murder some years back, their main evidence at the trial was the videotape they found of these assholes mugging for the camera before taping themselves killing someone (The TV show Homicide used the case in one of their episodes). This is the same situation.

Now you claim you were merely saying that two situations where people videoed bad behavior are on the same level. Your exact words are ‘This is the same situation’ however where as one was comparing a real crime that was against the rules to someone playing a game within the rules. A mildly different situation but one that can create a valid comparison. However when someone didn’t agree that criminal behavior shouldn’t be compared to a game instead of saying “That wasn’t my intention” you jump right to

> [@](#):
>
> And I am not either, as anyone with the reading comprehension of a toothpick can plainly see. I am talking about doing something wrong and then bragging about it afterwards. Like I said in my first post, if they want to be assholes, fine, let’s show them what asshole really means. Some people think that just because something happens in an online environment that propriety and common decency don’t apply. You are obviously one of those people. Don’t be surprised if people call you on the lack of maturity that you are displaying with that attitude.

So first you insult his ability to read when he did point out that you compared two very different things instead of clarifying your remarks in a civilized way then since he disagrees with you he’s immature. Nice behavior. However let’s go back a post

> [@](#):
>
> Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should do that thing. Adults understand this. Immature assholes do not. Nice of you to make it clear what category you belong in.

Here you’re not just happy calling him an asshole but an immature asshole. Keep in mind he didn’t insult or attack your position merely disagreed with where you were coming from.

> [@](#):
>
> You just don’t get it, do you? Are you this pathetic in real life, or is it just a part of your “Look at how big my dick is!” online persona? Come to think of it, that actually would explain a lot about your attitude WRT this incident in WoW. Just how insecure are you in real life anyway that you must overcompensate this badly online, hmm

Seriously? This is how you reply? It’s downright embarrassing to act this immature in a forum that has rules against insults when all of your replies at this point are full of them.

> [@](#):
>
> Tell ya what, El Kabong. How about we see just how consistent you are. Why don’t you start a thread, right now, defending Fred Phelps as a champion of First Amendment rights? After all, his picketing the funerals of dead gay folks or of U.S. servicemen killed overseas is completely and totally within the law, a robust expression of his First Amendment rights, right? There is nothing against the law in what he does, so anyone who criticizes it is totally off base, no? Are you prepared to take that position publicly, or are you a hypocrite?

Now your argument is totally off the rails. You’re saying that actions in a game where attacking and killing other players in a zone where the 90% of the reason to be in that zone is killing other players is the same thing as going to funerals and screaming that loved ones are going to burn in hellfire for eternity is exactly the same as making some toons respawn. In my view these are significantly different. I personally don’t think pot smoking should be illegal. I do think heroin should be. To some people that’d make me a hypocrite but most adults realize there are shades of grey in this world. You’re attempting to create an argument where if you don’t think one behavior deserves an extreme punishment then none do.

> [@](#):
>
> Thank you. Hypocrite. Just like I thought.

More name calling for disagreeing with you. I don’t think this needs too much more elaboration. I’ll skip the next few quotes because a couple are actually reasonable and I think I directly replied to them already anyway. So compare and contrast fo the audience how all of that compares to your view of

In my view they don’t compare at all. Once again I can’t speak for **Slacker** however your constant insults and bad behavior made you into exactly what you were ranting against. An asshole and one that couldn’t even keep in the rules with his bad behavior before it was moved to the pit. If you’d kept yourself to merely discussing the issue instead of attacking another poster then you wouldn’t have come off like a jackass.

So can you see how maybe just maybe I haven’t revised history but instead merely noted the facts as I saw them? Or will you go on seeing yourself as a crusader for ‘common decency’ (which I guess doesn’t include showing respect for who you’re debating one of those shades of grey I suppose.) All in all I’m not trying to piss you off or fuck with you it just made my jaw drop with how you think you were acting in this thread compared to how you were actually behaving.

(note: some of the posts were edited slightly for spelling. This was done accidentally when I spell checked the document and forgot to exclude the parts I quoted from my horrible horrible typing)

I stand by that, one of the chief hallmarks of maturity is recognizing that you are not the center of the universe, and that other people deserve respect and consideration. My language was a bit harsh for CS, and so I was warned, which is the Mods job, and I apologise for that.

So…you admit you went beyond decent behavior but only apologise not for being disrespectful but instead for doing it in the wrong forum. So the battle for respectful behavior only applies to different situations and places…hmmm kinda like how some people might view attacking a funeral in a game versus attacking a funeral in real life. Or are you _gasp_ a hypocrite? After all if you disagree with behavior in one form you have to do it everywhere equally by your arguments.

See? How hard is it to explain that way instead of insulting another person that read your ‘This is the same situation’ as a bit more literal then you intended?

Both Phelps and the WoW guild disrupted a memorial service, totally within the bounds of the law, just because they can. It’s a far from fasle as can be, seeing how they are both doing the exact same thing-intruding on other people’s grief for their own agendas.

Honestly we’ll just have to disagree here. I see it as they tried to hold a funeral in the middle of a football game on the field without approval of the stadium then had some players run through their service. Were the players assholes? Yes they could have respected the moment and wouldn’t have been too hard to go around or ignore it. They choose not to but the people that picked that spot instead of in the stands were idiots.
