> Umeboshi is a type of Japanese fruit. Wikipedia says it is translated as “salt plums” in English, so it’s possible I have had these before. I’m not sure.

You might have had it under a different name. In chinese it’s called “suan mei” which is translated as “sour plum”. It’s indeed very sour and usually covered in a sour/sugary/salty powder.

It’s also sometimes (but not often) served in congee.

> You sure you’ve seen guinea pigs/cuy here?

Oh, yeah. Cermak has cuy (frozen) almost year round, but they’re $29.99 each, so I’ve never gotten one. I still like to pick them up and tease my husband with them, though. They’re pretty scary looking. This week I didn’t see any - their usual freezer space was taken up with utterly unexotic looking frozen whole tomatoes from, I think, Ecuador, and gigantic cacahuacintle. I mean, HUGE. I can’t imagine the ear those suckers come from.

I’ve also seen cuy in the freezer next to the quail at Rogers Park Fruit Market, but I haven’t been there in years.

_Duros_, thanks! I may have to try them sometime, just for fun. They’re ridiculously cheap.

> I also should add, some of these are a little vague. Like what do they mean by “goulash”? I don’t think I’ve ever had the Americanized ground-beef-and-elbow-macaroni dish (although I’ve had similar dishes), but I’ve had the Hungarian stew as well as the soup.

Yeah, I wondered on that one, but checked it off, since like you, I’ve had all 3 versions (and a half dozen other Hungarian dishes that were riffs off the basic goulash/porkolt style).

I also wonder about how many of them people have had and not known that’s what they were eating, or that they’ve had something very similar- things like polenta and grits are awfully similar (maybe even the same, if hominy grits aren’t used). Or a po’boy vs a sub sandwich?

I have not had:

1. Abalone -Don’t they beat that on a rock?
2. Absinthe -Considered too dangerous
3. Bellini -Just never tried it, sounds good.
4. Bird’s Nest Soup -Ick
5. Chicken and Waffles (together, at the same time) -No, thank you.
6. Crickets -Not until I’m literally starving.
7. Dandelion Wine- Haven’t come across it.
8. Durian -Haven’t seen any around.
9. Fish Tacos -Where do you get these?
10. Fugu -I’m not ready to suicide yet.
11. Haggis- Kicking myself for not trying it in Scotland.
12. Kangaroo -Kinda thin on the ground here.
13. Lassi -Sounds delicious.
14. Nettle Tea -I would probably pick the wrong nettles.
15. Oxtail Soup -How different is this from bone soup?
16. Phaal -Oh, hell no.
17. Sea Urchin -Does roe count?
18. Som Tam -Also haven’t come across it.
19. Sweetbreads -Probably not, maybe deep-fried.
20. Tom Yum -Just haven’t tried it, might make it.
21. Umeboshi -Interesting, I would try them.

So, a score of 79, 80 if you count sea urchin roe. I traveled some when I was younger, I like staying home more now and only partly because it’s cheaper.

I’m not 100% sure what “bone soup” is, but if you just mean soup made from marrow bones or what not, oxtail soup is a good deal different, in my opinion. The focus of the oxtail soup is the meat itself, at least for me. The meat is perhaps the richest and most unctuous cut of beef on the cow. The only cut that comes close, for me, are the short ribs.
