I remember trying to adjust the color on those damned sets when I was a kid. It was a PITA, but I would still ride my bike over to a friend’s house on Wednesday and Thursday nights just so I could watch _ **Batman** _ in color.

On a side note ( I guess this is as good a place as any) when I was growing up we only had black and white TV until after I left home. I remember watching _The Wizard of Oz_ many times and having absolutely no idea that when the tornado ends and she exits the cabin into Oz everything turns to technicolor.

We weren’t just missing the color, we had no idea it was _in_ color. We thought the whole film was b&w because of how old it was. (wasn’t it one of the first wide-release picture to be in color?). Didn’t see the color version until I was maybe 30.

I remember positing in a similar thread that routine changes in color may be a result of admitting new member worlds each with its own historical traditions about colors and minor (or major) differences in color perception.

Yes, I remember those. One of my students in Moscow 20-odd years ago showed them to me on his computer, and I was amazed by how brilliant the colors were.

Believe it or not, that scene was not filmed through a filter. Everything in it, including Judy Garland’s dress and makeup, was sepia tinted. When she shows her back to the camera and opens the door, that’s exactly the way she looked in real life. The colorful scene outside the house was not matted in, either. It is precisely what she saw at that moment.

Yes. Sanguine, a color rarely used in heraldry, is actually more brown than red, and Purpure is more red than purple.

As was definitely the case with _ **The Addams Family** _:

Actually, it was her stand in who wore the sepia dress. They did a Texas switch in that scene. The actress, Caren Marsh Doll, is still with us at 107 years old.

The reason the uniforms are red is that they wanted to save on the budget of Star Trek 2, so they did dye tests on the Star Trek the Motion Picture gray uniforms to see which held the dye best. Red won. The principal actors got new tailored uniforms but the background actors all wore dyed TMP uniforms.
