A new plagiarism saga

IIRC, he did not report her himself. Rather, the Dean of her college got wind of the blog entry (possibly/probably from militant blog-readers) and all heck broke loose. He lays out the whole thing, along with his original plan, in a later entry.

Hey, no offense meant! And you’re not redundant—this story deserves its own thread!

does anybody else see aproblem with the ideas that her name is Laura KRISHNA and that she attends INDIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE ?

A google for India Community College turns up bunk.

I suspect it is not real.

After Laura and her college faculty started getting tons of phone calls, the blog author decided to remove/replace her real name and college name.

Far too late, of course, but a nice gesture.

Ya think? It might be because, as he said in one of his blog posts, he changed her name and college when he realized she was getting harrassed.

The last name and name of the school were changed at the request of Laura’s mother, after the scandal blew.

Sorry, RobuSensei, was referring to monkeyfist, not your post.

Who knows how much other cheating she had done to get herself on the Dean’s list. I hope she gets expelled.

I spent five long years struggling in college, and was always haunted by a feeling of doing a mediocre job overall. I could have cheated to get better grades, but I took the high road and felt that despite doing so-so in school, I was confident that it was all my own work.

With some of the semesters I was having, anybody that plagarized from me was just begging to get themselves a C minus :stuck_out_tongue: .

It’s more common in college than you would like to think. My university’s newspaper has a political cartoon artist whose multi-panel, barely legible cartoons make excessive use of “wuz,” “sez,” “wut,” “iz,” along with assorted symbol/letter combinations that I can’t remember right now.

The original name was Laura K <snipped by Lynn>, IIRC.

{Note: Deleted last name. Lynn}

I don’t really think that information should be shared by the Boards as it was removed from the original for good reason.

{Note: Last name snipped. Lynn}

Students email me to make excuse for not coming to class, beg for the opportunity to write extra credit papers, and complain about grade . . . in chatspeak.

“i went 2 my rents this wknd so i didnt turn in my hw friday. will u plz take it mday? tks!”

Shoot, that almost looks like an email from my lit professor.

For one thing, consider the harassment that she and her family have gotten (and will continue to get) from over-zealous do-gooder vigilantes over this. For another thing, consider the harassment that innocent girls with the same name, and their families, will get over this. Consider the harassment that a British doctor got because a group of vigilantes could distinguish between the words “paedophile” and “paediatrician.” Or the harassing phone calls that men around the country named Bryan Winter got for the mere crime of sharing the same name as some arrogant guy that an embittered e-mailer once dated.

Third, while I have no great love for plagiarizers, I have no more love for those who appoint themselves as the teachers of morality to others. It’s arrogant, it’s sanctimonious, and it rarely if ever turns out well.

No offense, but… Is that what your morality says?

I do agree that she’s been punished enough, though.

I’m not sure quite what you’re asking here, but…

If you’re asking if my morality says that it’s wrong to appoint yourself judge, jury, and executioner to a complete stranger, and take the law into your own hands to “teach someone a lesson” – primarily so you can feel better about yourself – then yes. That’s what my morality says.

I call Bullshit. Not only does India Community College not exist, it does not show up ANYWHERE. Not in lists of Illinois Colleges, nowhere in google except connected to discussions about “Laura Krishna”, not in any web achives. Does anybody really think that some girl’s mom can get a college to change its name and erase all trace of its former name in any records? Until I see real evidence that there ever was an “India Community College” anywhere, with a student named Laura Krishna , who bought a paper about Hinduism, I’m calling BS, BS, BS. And frankly I’m surprised that anybody fell for it.

That’s not the claim that was made. She reportedly got the blogger to change her name and her school’s name in the blog. Like when a movie changes the names of real life characters to “protect the innocent.” As in William Randolph Hearst to Charlie Kane. It’s not like Orson Wells actually convinced Hearst to change his name.

Heh heh heh.

I’ve got no love for plagiarizers, and I’m not especially sad that she’s going to get seriously punished for this, but at the same time, I can’t really take a great deal of pleasure in her punishment. She acted like a fool and is suffering the consequences of it, with the key word being “suffering.”

And in the grand scheme of things, while plagiarism is pretty bad, it’s not like she committed assault, or scammed a grandma out of her life savings. Nobody was injured, nobody was kicked out of their home. SHe assaulted the educational system, which is bad, but it’s not extremely bad.

Here’s hoping she’ll learn her lesson and be able to recover from it.

Daniel

I heard the mom got so mad she made us all permanently alter our memories of the incident!
