In the book Selina doesn’t find out that Poiter is black until the end, when the crowd starts screaming the “N word.” In the movie she finds out a lot sooner, which makes it totally different.
Still good, but it had more impact in the book.
I think it’s still effective in the movie when she knows he’s black, but she doesn’t care. You can see the torture in his eyes as he struggles with the decision to tell her, and how shocked and relived he is when she reveals that she’s known for awhile.
