John McCain also championed the Magnitsky Act. Bill Browder tells the story in his book, Red Notice. After the Russians, with assistance from police and government agencies, conspired to steal his investments - which resulted in the murder of a Russian employee, Serge Magnitsky, Browder made seeking justice for this crime a full time job. He wasn’t getting anywhere until someone landed him a 10 minute appointment with John McCain. He describes how McCain, after hearing his story, cancelled the rest of his appointments for the afternoon and spent several hours with him, a meeting that ultimately resulted in the Magnitsky Act. McCain may be a shithead in many ways, but I hardly see him as a Putin puppet. ---
