He could have put his phone on airplane mode, and they wouldn’t have been able to use it to find him. Or course, he wouldn’t get calls or email either, but everything requires some sacrifice. ---

Basic triangulation should get you a search ring of less than a square mile. A savvy switch engineer with a map and the right tools has a good shot at narrowing that down further, if the phone is moving. (When I was doing cellular network optimization, I could run a handful of switch commands and point to which intersection a drive-test team had just passed through, because I knew where the handoffs happened.) Grabbing the phone’s GPS data would be much more accurate, of course, but the switches don’t use that, so you’d have to go through different channels to get it. And the Pillow Pillock has less chance of understanding any of that than one of his products. ---

I don’t recall Gitmo being particularly renowned for its pleasant facilities, but perhaps they’ve remodelled it and, I dunno, put in hot tubs and ESPN or something. Nonetheless, while I suspect most prisons are far less hospitable than even they ought to be, I’m not finding their “It’s not fair because we don’t like prison” argument compelling as presented. ---
