He was also in charge of the Covid task force, opioid crisis, [among other things](https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/6/13/21265067/jared-kushner-trump-white-house-andrea-bernstein)). During the former administration it was a running gag about how many different things Jared was put in charge of. I think Trump viewed Jared as the smartest guy he knew (this reflects more negatively on Trump than it does positively on Jared) and so any time he was faced with something difficult he’d call him up. As to why the current frosty feelings, more than anything I’m sure it has to do with the fact that Jared and Ivanka are sore about getting fitted for orange jump suits by the New York AG for their involvement in the Trump organization. ---
