If you sweep a stone early, you can delay the point at which it starts to curl. Or, you can wait until the stone starts to curl, and then sweep. Those two stones will wind up in different places. How much you sweep, and even when you sweep, can alter the path and distance of the stone. It’s subtle, but sometimes an inch or two can make a big difference. There’s also something called corner sweeping. If you watch a sweeper, the strokes of the broom are at a 45-degree angle to the path of the stone. That leaves tiny scratches across the ice. If there’s only one sweeper, those scratches will tend to influence the stone away from the sweeper. Again, it’s not a huge difference, but sometimes it’s enough. Some teams were experimenting with different materials on their broom heads to have more of an impact, so a few years ago they started mandating a standard, mustard-yellow fabric for all brooms. I don’t know what that does to your analogy. ---

I read an article once about Canadian curlers making instrumented brooms, so they could measure the speed and pressure of their sweeping. They couldn’t use them in competition, but it was useful in training. ---

The Republican Party has said that they won’t allow Republican candidates on the debate stage unless they sign a pledge to support the eventual candidate. Individual 1 has already said that he won’t guarantee his support for the candidate if it isn’t him. Does anybody believe they will really prevent him from appearing on the stage? ---
