I can’t find the name of the person who said this, but one person said:

> I’ve heard from a reliable source, that Trump smells of soiled diapers, Axe Body Spray and hotdog burps.

This reminds me of all those scenes in media where the good guy says something like, “I’m not going to do this because then I’d be as bad you are!” Dude killed a bus load of nuns, killing him does not make you as bad as he is! I promise. So, yes, I choose to give Trump a taste of his own medicine. It’s only fair and proper.

When their side is accusing ‘’‘my’‘’ side of being cannibal child molesters that want to put their side in repurposed Walmart death camps . . . making fun of Trump for this doesn’t even move the meter.

> I view this more as Donald Trump making his own bed and having to lie in it. We’re mocking Trump because he’s spent years mocking others in order to make himself seem stronger by comparison. Remember when he mocked a disabled reporter? Or when he insulted John McCain for getting capture during the Vietnam War? How about when he referred to deal US soldiers as “losers?” Referring to current military leaders as stupid, Bill Barr as weak, Joe Biden as someone who can’t “put two sentences together.” It’s not a matter of the ends justifying the means. Trump is just reaping what he sowed.

I have no problem with mocking Trump about his behavior, nor with pointing out his hypocrisy. But most of the mockery of his physical person does not have any of that background with it, nor any nuance of “how does it feel when other people do to you the same thing that you have done.” Just mocking him for physical problems too easily moves into doing exactly what he does and becoming exactly like him, at least in that respect. It shows lack of respect, not for him, but for yourself and your own character.

I don’t give a damn about Trump’s feelings, and I’m not talking about taking the high ground. I am talking about not letting Trump leave behind that part of his legacy that includes normalizing bad behavior.

The flip side is, in an effort to be the adults in the room, not engage in the BS, or drop to the level of Trump and MAGA, that Democratic forces in the nation largely left the entire discussion to forces of chaos. Since they didn’t fight back, it made it easier for the MAGA team to push ever more insane conspiracy theories, language, and image forward. And when the Democrats were quiet, because in an adult world, it was beneath everyone to respond to allegations (porn rings, grooming, replacement) it made some fence-sitters or MAGA-curious folks believe “Well, if they don’t fight back, they must be guilty, maybe not of X but of _something_”

So, yeah, the _practical_ elements of not engaging with the childish insults, attacks, and the likes are legitimate. If you make a moral choice in not sinking to the level, it’s fine, but there are still consequences.

You have a valid point, I get where you’re coming from, and I respect your position. In many ways, I feel as though my back is against the wall as millions of Americans support a dangerous autocrat whom I feel threatens the very existance of the United States as I know it. As a former Republican, I spent years pointing out Trump’s various faults, his lies, his comments about members of our armed forces, the exclusion of solid Republicans simply because they wouldn’t toe Trump’s line only to be told that I was a RINO and didn’t belong.

While there are lines I won’t cross (I won’t attack Barron for instance), I have very little interest in taking the high rode. I’m not going to lie, but I’ll undermine Trump in front of his supporters any change I get. Anyone makes a comment about the Biden Crime family, I’ve got a whole slew of things to reply with. They talk about Biden being infirm, well, let’s take a look at Diaper Don. I’m glad Trump gets to see this swell of negativity undermining his projection of strength. I hope it’s an additional burden to the other stresses he’s experiencing.

I understand that I’m probably in the minority on this; just wanted to add one more data point.

It sometimes seems to me that people justify things with some variation of “Trump chooses to be crass and insulting, but we have to be crass and insulting to battle Trump.” The truth is, we all choose to behave as we do. Not a judgment, just an observation.

I get where you’re coming from. But I also see that a lot of this is from the fact that he holds himself out as a perfect specimen. Hell, he even got a career doctor (I can’t remember if it was a miltiary doctor or a USPHS Commissioned Corps doctor; at any rate a Uniformed Services medico) who should know better to lie to the public about his health condition. The grief coming his way is therefore deserved because it’s a factual debunking of his usual bullshit.

I too will not attack Barron _for now_. But I am also watching him. I might attack him later, if he gives me reasons to do so. He is a Trump after all. I woud not have attacked Don Jr. or Eric when they were kids, but look at them now. Beware. I think he is more under the influence of his mother than his father, but his mother is not kosher either.

Minor point - I said, and you quoted that you can make the moral choice to not sink to the level, and that there were consequences. But that’s not the _same_ as saying “we have to be crass and insulting to battle Trump.”

Just that like anything else, it’s a choice. You get to choose where your personal comfort and moral level is. And that letting the other party control the flow, or be the only one heard, is often detrimental to your own needs.

I didn’t mean you specifically, or to limit it to the current discussion about Trump. I was just trying to describe something that I’ve noticed occasionally over the years; blaming some people for their agency while making excuses for others.

While it’s tempting to just endorse this and leave it at that, my (admittedly vague) impression of the concept of karma suggests that it is a holistic thing; that is, appointing oneself an “agent of karma” upon another is a perilous endeavor (I’d say _hubristic_ if I didn’t care about mixing metaphysical concepts from two different cultures), as it incurs its own karmic tab that will be presented at some point.

OTOH, I’ve been trying to cut down on cosmic mysticism, so I’m pretty much in the _he can dish it out, but he can’t take it_ camp; I’m content to watch it all unfold and enjoy the spectacle. I’ll let the karmic chips fall where they may.
