I think it would be trivially easy for an expert to estimate the covered area and knowing the persons/area value for such crowds, calculate the number of heads. ---

I see some fencing and stall tents. Those are probably fairly standard sized, so someone with some free time could track those down and calculate the square footage of the main blob. There are probably statistics on how many people you get per square foot in an average crowd. Then count up the stragglers ---

Assuming that the stage is 18’ wide and the crowd is about 4x that width, and you could pull back the two arms and the stragglers to fill a square, that’s about 72’x72’. Looks like fairly dense crowds range between 2.5 (very dense) to 4.5 sqft (lightly dense). At the higher density, I only get about 2000 people. ---

Then I found this online crowd counting tool and roughed out the area of densest packing, which I guessed to be 4 people per square meter. This gives a crowd size of about 3,000. People scattered outside the densest area might add a couple hundred at most, which gets us very close to the 3,500 tickets given out.
