You’re sure about that? I can see them thinking Coat duh Ivory is a funny-named state in the country of Africa.

Never having been on a grand jury I am muzzy on the details on how it works. I understand the prosecutor says, “We have this evidence point to the possibility that this person is guilty of a crime,” and the jury says either, “This is baloney,” or “Yes, there is enough evidence here to bring this to trial.”

Is the prosecutor under any kind of oath when the information (I won’t call it evidence yet) is presented? If so how is the truthiness determined and what happens if the prosecutor did straight-up lie, which I have no trouble believing happened here and in many other Federal cases in the news lately.

A lot of them take it one step further and fool themselves. Which, like Tribbles being born pregnant, saves a great deal of time & energy.

As an officer of the court, prosecutors are bound to behave within certain ethical guidelines. You may have recently heard that judges are no longer giving federal prosecutors the presumption of regularity. The presumption of regularity is when the courts assume officers of the court are performing their jobs in good faith, making sure to follow rules and procedures. We’ve already seen federal cases where it turns out the prosecutor wasn’t instructing the grand jury properly, which is why judges no longer give them the presumption of regularity.

Capital One says anti-money laundering review prompted closure of more than 300 Trump-affiliated accounts.

> Capital One Financial hit back on Friday against a lawsuit over its decision to close ‌the Trump Organization’s bank accounts years ago, stating that it did so after a review by anti-money laundering experts.

> The disclosure marks the first time a bank has formally tied money laundering concerns to U.S. President Donald Trump’s family business. I would have only guessed that Côte d’Ivoire’s name meant that it was on the sea because I already knew of the country called Ivory Coast. Otherwise I would have been misled by knowing that in France, something called a Côte sometimes is an inland hill or ridge.

So, no oath breaking as such but does it rise to the point of letting the local bar know? (Rubs hands in anticipation)

I won’t pretend to be knowledgeable about federal (or any state) court proceedings. To the honest, I’ve learned a lot more about how federal courts are supposed to work during Trump’s break between administrations and his second. I don’t know if any meaningful punishment has been or can be doled out because of prosecutorial behavior during grand juries. I do know judges are a lot more willing to open up grand jury testimonies for examination than they were precisely because federal prosecutors can no longer be trusted.

> I mean, as someone who lives next to a place called Rhode Island, I’m not sure I can quite get behind that logic.

I lived in Rhode Island for seven years, and my son was born there.

The name of the state derives from Aquidneck Island (the original “Rhode Island”), which (a) is indisputably an island, (b) was one of the two main settlements of the original colony.

(Despite this, it doesn’t make much of a significant proportion of the state by land area, less than 5%. It did make up a significant portion of the populated area of the original colony, though.)

That’s why, when I lived there, the formal name of the state was the “State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.” The latter part of the name referred to the mainland portion of the state. That was the name of the colony (and later the state) from 1636 until 2020.

It took a ballot measure to remove “and Providence Plantations” from the name of the state in 2020 to address connotations with slavery.

And six years have already passed without TDS-addled GOPers in that state braying about DEI interventionism, or something, to try to get “and Providence Plantations” reinstated?
