Merriam-Webster is keeping up with the times with XX words. Before these came along, the only dictionary words with XX were hundreds of year-old variant spellings found only in the OED. Now M-W has these entries: vaxx, along with vaxxes, vaxxing, vaxxed doxx (variant of dox) along with doxxes, doxxed, doxxing -maxxing, combinative form, such as these: looksmaxxing sleepmaxxing There may be more in the -maxxing crowd. Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, any headword in an English-language dictionary should be considered a valid English word. YMMV of course. ---

A bazillion years ago I read that when Standard Oil wanted to reorganize and rebrand itself they wanted a new name. Being international they didn’t want a name that meant something like “horse balls” in some obscure language. It turned out that the only language that had words with a double-X was Maltese. Jimmy Foxx the baseball player was of Maltese ancestry as an example. So a list of words with two Xs in them that sounded good was drawn up, Exxon was selected, a dictionary was checked, and the rest his history. ---
