Way back in he early 1980s, I saw it in the theater on Calle Principal in Monterey as the second part of a double feature. The first part was _Class of 1984_. Those movies rot. Really?!? I don’t remember that at all. “Class Of 1984” was one of the cheap flicks I watched at a friend in the early days of the VHS craze, when such fare was frequently circulated. I only remember that I already noticed at that time that Hollywood punks looked different than real punks. ---

Back in my high school computer programming days, I used to write code for fun using BASIC. One common debugging command was “trace on” in order to tell what line of code you were on as the program was running. The actual BASIC language syntax for that command was “TRON”. (And similarly, “TROFF” was the command to “trace off”.) I always assumed that’s where the film got its name from. But apparently, the name was just truncated from the middle of the word “electronic”, at least according to the writer/director of the film. Similarly, Exxon’s name origin has nothing to do with “XON”. As stated earlier, it was derived from “Esso”, the older name (which itself was just a phonetic representation of the Standard Oil initials “SO”). In this case, they used a computer to generate hundreds of variations of the Esso name, and then put those various names through different tests, and “Exxon” was the winner. It was very clinical. This comes from a contemporary article in _The Business History Review_ in 1973 (a year after the name change was implemented). In the late 60s, I remember seeing “Enco” as another spinoff of Standard Oil. I was in grade school, so I never understood the explanations grownups gave me. ---

Standard Oil of New Jersey was a big part of what became Exxon. Some of the other Standard Oils didn’t like having Esso appropriated by just one of them, hence Enco in jurisdictions where those other Standard Oils got the courts to agree with them. The history of what became of the various Standard Oils is interesting in itself. Sort of like what happened with the baby Bells, though in that case, most of them have re-merged to more or less re-form AT&T ---
