# A pitting for Paul\_was\_in\_Saudi

Guess I’ll answer this here.

It was in the US, and no, that wasn’t a concern. My chief concern is that Christians are going to [break up my marriage](https://www.glamour.com/story/the-vatican-put-out-a-statement-condemning-same-sex-marriages). Second place concern is that some Christian will decide that being gay is sufficient reason to [fire me](https://www.orlandosentinel.com/opinion/scott-maxwell-commentary/os-op-gay-teacher-fired-florida-scott-maxwell-20201023-mnfwdiqejrd2blf4cermulgeji-story.html), or [throw me out of my house](https://www.insider.com/wisconsin-couple-threatened-with-eviction-over-gay-pride-flag-2019-4). Concerns about [my personal safety](https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/co-defendant-testifies-word-faith-minister-article-1.3218230) aren’t really that high on the list, although I do worry about [my wife](https://www.thedailybeast.com/guardian-journalist-lois-beckett-attacked-at-anti-trans-rally-outside-los-angeles-wi-spa), who is trans.

Now, that’s just some recent examples of anti-gay bigotry directed at gays by American Christians. I could have thrown in how they’re [being treated in Russia](https://foreignpolicy.com/2021/07/07/tblisi-pride-attack-lgbt-rights-georgia/), with the full blessings ([and occasional participation](https://observers.france24.com/en/europe/20210707-georgia-lgbt-pride-march-right-wing-orthodox-attacks)) of the Russia Orthodox Church, or what [Christians in Uganda](https://www.hrw.org/news/2019/10/15/uganda-brutal-killing-gay-activist) ([with the aid and backing of American Evangelicals)](https://www.pri.org/stories/2013-11-15/how-american-evangelicals-made-life-unbearable-gays-uganda) are up to.

And, sure, that’s the extreme. And I don’t really lose a ton of sleep worrying about that stuff. Mostly what I have to deal with is [shit-eyed little worms making snide homophobic remarks](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/new-android-google-phone/931990) and [grubby hypocrites getting all huffy when people don’t eat their shit with a smile.](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/why-dont-liberals-and-democrats-fully-embrace-atheism/946421/149)

Of course, I’m aware that’s not all Christians, or even most Christians. I know that most Christians aren’t like, you, @Paul_was_in_Saudi. Most Christians are decent, compassionate people, and I know that I shouldn’t judge the group by the example you set.

But Lord, it is a struggle.
